I have a walk-in closet in my house that I want to turn into a secret hidden room, so I'm going to build a low-cost bookshelf that conceals the door to the closet completely without making any permanent changes to the architecture of the building. Enjoy! Be inspired!

I love how you made it so people can't just look for a pull string, but have to actually unscrew part of it open. That is amazing. Nobody who had an idea it could be a secret room would think to look behind a screwed in strip of wood.

Honestly one of my favorite hidden book shelves. A lot of other project recess into the wall and include removing an already hinged door. Saves so much time, measuring, and routing if you just use the already installed door. Well done.

The problem with this is I would want to show everyone which would defeat the purpose....

For everyone who’s afraid that their door is gonna break: You can put rolls under the book shelf to make the pressure even

At first I thought I would be obvious. But the finished product was awesome. Well done

I like using the original door with lock for securing the room. I would only suggest instead of a screw to put the board back; hiding the lock, maybe some inset magnets to secure the board quicker and easier than trying to have a screwdriver around!?!? great customization in hiding the left side of the original door and lock!!

Based on the location of the doorway you are using... I would suggest reversing how the door opens, so that it opens from the left-hand... Then it wouldn't be opening toward the wall. Use long hinge-plates -- so the pivot line is about 3/4" further out from the door facing -- and the shelf-unit could open a full 90 degrees...

It is like a panic room as well. Just a feature I like in a room and looking incredibly nifty!
  • Could’ve re-hinged the door to swing the other way. Still a great job.

Imagine creating a secret room only for 400k people to see it

Nice job for a DIY guy with basic tools. For anyone thinking about doing this I would suggest using cabinet grade plywood over construction grade. It will provide a much nicer/smoother paint finish, and is much easier to work with because it remains flatter. That was a lot of extra work to accommodate the problem of the unit hitting the wall. Just move the door hinges to the opposite edge to alternate the door swing.

My YouTube algorithm brought me here... make one secret door video and now I can’t stop checking out everyone else’s!! Nice job!
