Nestled in the bleak windswept fells of Northern Cumbria, this abandoned mine office known locally as 'The Gairs' is truly an awesome sight the first time you discover it.
Visiting with my Mavic 2 Pro, I decided to capture cinematic drone footage before it deteriorated any further.

The remote Gairs Colliery is thought to be one of the oldest coal mines in England, possibly worked by the Romans. Owned by the Naworth Coal company, the mine (with two seams) began construction in 1909 and was completed in 1912.
At its peak in 1921 the Gairs Colliery employed 180 below ground and 51 above ground, producing 70,000 tonnes of coal per year. It was finally abandoned on the 6th September 1936.
The isolated Gairs mining office is still standing and is a fantastic place to walk to escape with your thoughts and imagine the colliery at work.

This is superb! How they managed to get a railway (standard gauge) up there almost beggars belief. Such enterprise speaks volumes for the get-up-and-go that this country seems to have lost.

Ok..........so here we go......... Beautiful area! Awesome subject to film! Great color grading! great editing! loved the reveal at the beginning as you tilted the gimbal up coming up the valley. I think its neat how that place is just nestled there all by itself with the surrounding landscape! Great job!!!!! not sure if i've ran across your channel before but glad i seen this.. i'm now heading to check out your other videos!

I had no idea it was an abandoned mine - I assumed it was an old farmhouse! Fab. shots - and interesting that it was so dry at that point, although you can see from the track how wet it gets. Have you been further round to Forest Head? Surreal post-industrial landscape. Love the film!
