  • Ex IW dev, current Respawn dev here. Thank you for this. It was a lovely trip down memory lane. <3

Remember, switching to your pistol is always faster than reloading.
  • Ray: writes well thought out and well constructed script Also Ray: "Halo 3 was a successor to its predecessor"
  • I never respected Call of Duty as much as now. I never knew MW was such a work of love and art. Activision's mangling is now even more obscene.

“From the moment your Russian ally opens a door, it’s, AAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGHHHH until the credits roll.” That made me crack up so much

the main reason the nuke scene was so impactful, was because they correctly betted that their main audience were taking everything at face value. Also we shouldn't discount the fact that a lot of younger people were playing and young people aren't exactly known for observing subtle details especially in an era where games were seen by most as entertainment and having a good story was usually luck not intention
  • Well, the last shootout in One Shot, One Kill isn't that hard if you- 26:43 Ok, I said nothing.

"That was an improvement, but it's not hard to improve on garbage" 10/10 insult

"EA was notorious for absolving beloved studios." *cries in Respawn*
  • Raven Software dev (Sr. Sound Designer) here. I'm really happy that you called out the sound design and mix overhaul in MWR. I wasn't at Raven yet at the time MWR was being worked on but Andy Bayless, Mark Kilborn and the other sound designers who worked on MWR did an amazing job. They managed to revitalize the sound of this game while maintaining a lot of the original character and I know they put in a TON of work, effort, and long hours to achieve that goal.

"It's a stark contrast to Call of Duty 2, where from the moment your Russian Ally opens a door, it's just DUUUWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! until the credits roll." -Raycevick, 2019

I played CoD4 on release when I was 17. The aerial bombardment mission for me was arcade-y and didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. It was simply a "shoot the thing on the screen" mission. Replaying it at 29 years old it definitely does make me feel a bit uncomfortable as it perfectly captures how impersonal war can get. In a world where drone strikes controlled by UAV pilots half a world away are commonplace, I can't help but wonder about the impact such things has on the psychology of those pilots. The knowledge that that's a real person, but it's not an immediate kill or be killed situation.

I played the Wii version of this like 8 years ago, and I remember replaying the AC-130 mission over and over again because of how fun it was. Last year, the remastered version was free for PS+, so I downloaded it and played it all again... only to feel genuinely disturbed by Death From Above. You can watch enemies panic and try to take cover in vain, and the only separation between good guys and bad guys is “blinky guys good, not-blinky guys bad.” Everyone looks the same and it makes you feel the absurdity of war and American intervention.

played this with a friend right after we had gotten back from Iraq. finished my first playthrough in 6 hrs straight through. so many scenes stand out for me: that nuke scene completely caught me off guard. I was in awe and completely surprised that a game would go there. the AC-130 scene was eerie in it's accuracy; I had seen actual video of real-life missions while in Iraq. hell, an ac-130 mission had happened in my sector and one of our platoons had to go out and survey the aftermath. shit was very realistic when I first played it. all that to say, this game holds a special place in my heart and if I had go on the campaign, it's clearly anti-war for which I'm glad it is.

God I miss this time in my life, wow

"therapeutic" is not how I would describe a game which gives people thousands of aneurisms daily from rage
