Tiny House Designed To Be Elderly / Disability / Mobility Friendly

Published 2019-01-04
Growing older is a gift. Unfortunately that gift also comes with it’s own burdens, often meaning a lack of mobility and thus a loss of independence. This spectacular tiny house design has helped to give mobility and independence back to one very special lady though, through some very clever small space design to create an elderly, disability and mobility friendly tiny house on wheels.

This tiny house has many elderly / disability friendly features which helps to make this tiny home a very liveable space. These features include design aspects such as ramps, reinforced walls for secure hand rails, and an accessibility toilet and shower. Care was taken to ensure there are zero trip hazards in the home and the dimensions of the home were even designed around the ability to use a wheelchair in the tiny house if need be.

For those who have disabilities or mobility issues, one of the best things about a tiny house on wheels is that you can design it to your specific needs. In this case, Merle has a home where she is warm and comfortable, but most importantly, a house which has given her back her independence and dramatically increased her quality of life.

This one’s a real heart-warming tiny house story. If only we could all be as fortunate as Merle in our ‘more mature’ years. I hope you enjoy it!

This tiny house was constructed by Ferne’s company, Tiny Footprint in Australia. Check out their website here: www.tinyfootprint.com.au/

  • Hello All, to let those that enquire after Merle. She sadly passed away 31 october 3022. She lived in her tiny up to a week prior to getting ill. One of her fond memories is of the time rasa and bryce visited and made this video. Regards Ferne King (daughter)

This is how our older generation should be living, close to family and in a safe environment.

Forget about "This is built for elderly." This makes so much sense for anyone. It was made with common sense and beauty. Love it!

As an aging senior, I would love to live in a tiny home like this. Easy and accessible. It's lovely and peaceful, close to family, nature, simplicity, and ease of living.
  • I think I am about to cry! 😭 The way the mother is so taken care of and is happy with her quality of life is beautiful!
  • @ardenardis
Isn't the lady's daughter amazing. Thought of everything and did everything for her mother.
  • @lemons_s
The amount of thought the daughter put into this to be able to give her mother security and independence is very touching.

How blessed she is to have a daughter who is so on touch with her needs. I wish my family could understand how important it is to older people to remain independent. My daughter is a nurse, but still often times forgets how important it is to me to keep my independence. My son-in-law would shove me in assisted living and forget about me. But I have a voice and no one will take my independence from me. God bless her family!

As a disabled person, I've never actually seen a tiny home that could be livable for me! This is really cool.

Wish more people treated their aging family members this way. We need to take care of them as they took care of us 💚 this !
  • I'm dumbfounded...this is what I wish I could do for my mom. Our parents work so hard to take care of us, they deserve the same. I absolutely love this house

“I don’t want to live for a house. I want to enjoy one!” Amen to that
  • @jasenchasen
The daughter was very professional, informative and kind to her Mother. I like that.

I wish more people had the disposable income to allow the elderly population to live with dignity in their final years. Not trying to be a downer at all. But this is beautiful, and I wish more of us could see this for our parents and grandparents. Also, I want to give this woman the biggest hug. What a sweetheart!!!

when i come to "a more mature age" i want to be that happy.
  • @jamLP
This grandmother is the sweetest! Every time I watch this video (and I have watched it a few times because I love this design), I am tickled by the grandmother and how Bryce seems equally delighted by her. I imagine she immediately asked him if he wanted tea and a cookie!
  • "I don't want to live for a house...I want to enjoy one" - gotta say I loved that x

This got me teary eyed. The daughter's love for her mother is reflected in this house. The daughter has thought of everything to make her mother comfortable, and safe.
  • What an amazing way to spend the last years of your life. The love the daughter has for her mother is amazing and so heartwarming.
