A new breed of frontier family

Isle au Haut has a year-round population of about 50 hardy souls, unafraid of living on an island with few amenities off the coast of Maine. When the island's Community Development Corporation posted an invitation for new residents, Dakota and Hannah Waters, from central Massachusetts, took up the challenge, along with their children, Flynn and Amelia. Correspondent Steve Hartman spoke with the couple about trading convenience for a life they call "indescribably wholesome."

I just spent a few days vacationing on Madeline Island in Lake Superior and got that same feeling. There is something special about places like that, and the people who live there are people I admire!!!

I could use a change like this after 38 years in central PA. If only my darling husband liked to travel!

What's it like as autumn turns to winter and winter lingers for a few months? How cold does it get? How much snow? Do people get snow bound in their homes?

Well other than living off the land and 50 other families supporting you for whatever your work is there, you have to come there with money. Otherwise, how do you pay for your home, property, taxes, electricity, gas, water, necessities. It is an idyllic life, but I don't think one turns into a total off grid survivalist like the wilds of Alaska at this place. Was that process of selection to mean we will pay for your housing, you just come here? 🤔
  • This is my nightmare! 😖 All the hallmarks of a horror movie premise. I feel bad for the kids, they need socialization.

Question is can you go without Costco or Starbucks? If you can then go give it a try.

Give it 10 years and home prices will be 2.5 mil for a two bed room condo, 150 Star Bucks every where you turn and Taylor Swift concerts in the summer.

A little weird that they didn't wave to each other on the road.

Another boring, pointless, over-sentimentalized “story” from Steve Hartman. Family moves to remote island… BFD 🥱
