When a woman brings in a stunning diamond necklace to the pawn shop, she's truly shocked at how much it's worth! Subscribe to Our Stories: bit.ly/3lzSXhv

This fascinating documentary series goes behind-the-scenes with the kings of high-end pawnbroking. Just where do the rich sell their fast cars, fine wines and designer goods when they need money? When it comes to pawning luxurious items, James Constantinou's company, Prestige Pawnbrokers, is the place to go for the upper class wanting fast cash, and it's an empire on the move. Along with his quirky team of experts, James seeks to sort the fakes from the fortune making. It's a crazy world where anything luxurious and sometimes unimaginable has a possible ticket on it. Ranging from incredible jewels, to original art masterpieces and even submarines, behind every precious item there is a story to tell.

In this episode, the staff at Prestige Pawnbrokers are blown away by two jaw-dropping diamond necklaces, owned by two very different clients. Single mum Marcella is looking for a better future for herself and her son and needs £20,000 to kick-start her music career, while wealthy mother-of-four Ingrid wants to raise capital for her new horse importation and training business. They both hope that family heirlooms that have been gathering dust can kick-start their new lives. But following a closer inspection of one of the necklaces, there's a sleepless night for staff member Patrick, who suspects one could be fake. And Prestige MD James Constantinou is excited by a very unusual yellow mini submarine, which policeman David wants to sell. James tests it in a 'James Bond-style' underwater joyride, as he attempts to impress a potential buyer.

  • I would NEVER tell an appraiser how much I thought an item was worth or how much I want for it.
  • if i was selling a piece of jewelry i'd first get several offers before i decided on one. i cant believe owners not only pawned family heirlooms but practically gave them away. i'd be pretty upset if i handed down family heirlooms and they were bartered away on the cheap.

Both diamond necklaces were stunning. I'm sad Michael's scroll wasn't worth more. He and his mom are such nice people.

Is anyone else doubtful about whether the first woman with the heirloom diamond necklace, has the business and money management skills to make a new business a success? I mean she just took the first offer on that necklace, rather than waiting and asking around and getting several appraisals. She didn't do any research, wasn't prepared to be a bit more patient and wait a while to get the best price possible.

Yes, she should have taken that necklace to an auction. She would have gotten way more money.

For such a huge difference, I would do that necklace with auction

"He looks like Liberace even on a Wednesday afternoon." 🤣🤣🤣
  • What an absolutely lovely guy Michael is. I am glad I wasn't the one to tell him the disappointing news, I would have melted and given him the ten grand.
  • Oh Marcella deserves it so much! I'm so happy for her and her boy is so sweet and adorable. I hope she is successful in her career
  • Is it just me or does it feel absolutely wrong to sell a family heirloom? Especially one as magnificent as some of these jewlery peices? Especially if the money is for a dream and your already well off.... it's one thing to sell it if your in desperate need for money to survive, but another just so fulfill a something you want to do.. Which is essentially a risk. I'd be very upset if my daughter's did something like that. Then again, I'm American and heirlooms are very, very precious and irreplaceable. Not sure if they are looked at the same in other countries. I would think so, but i may be wrong.

I can’t believe the First Lady sold that necklace for half of what it was worth, £120,00 for an item worth £250,000 ! I would have got several appraisals first and also several offers in before agreeing to anything. I really feel that she may have been possibly jumped too quickly to sell it and could have got at least 50-60k more. And again it goes the same for the second lady. It’s worth £120,000 but we will give you £50k. Something doesn’t sit right with me with these stunning diamond necklaces. I myself had a necklace gifted to me from an ex partner. He purchased it when we were in Amsterdam about 25 years ago. And when we split he never wanted it backs so it sat in a drawer for around 18 years. I could never bring myself to wear it. I had mine appraised by quite a few experts over the years mainly for house insurance purposes and generally it came out around £4k which was not bad considering it was a gift, I was spoilt a lot by my ex. It was set in platinum which also added value. So I kept it thinking I would give it to my daughter (If i had one) for her wedding day but sadly I wasn’t able to have children. This year I gave it to my best friend who means the world to me, the only condition was to hand it down to one of her daughters and she was more than happy to agree. It’s nice seeing her wear it all the time as it’s a beautiful solitaire of high clarity and i can really see the joy it brings to her. And at least I know it won’t go to waste.

These brokers take advantage of the desperate and the ignorant. Especially, when you don’t really know the value of what you have. They give the potential buyers they procure a heads up and broker the deal on behalf of the buyer.

Government agencies doesn't use gmail or any public email domain. They normally have their exclusivity.
  • Liberace is now my official new favorite shop owner/expert on all reality television. I must meet this man. Lol!❤️

We really do owe a lot to our parents and grandparents. The kind of things they do to set us up are just amazing.

Im seeing a lot of comments here from people who dont understand the difference between RETAIL valuations, AUCTION valuations and INSURANCE valuations. You can receive 3 completely different valuations on the same items,. Insurance being the highest valuations, retail next, THEN auction being the lowest (especially considering high commission fees & taxes). NEITHER of these woman have any way of selling a $250k necklace to the public, they have NO publicity, NO medium or venue, there is NO way they can get the retail value of 250k for a necklace. If they chose to sell it at AUCTION, the auction would value it at 80-90K, then if it sells at that value, they will have to pay high premiums (up to 40% at Christies & Sothebys) plus taxes, plus taxes on commissions. Finally, if someone retailer was going to purchase an item from one of these women, they wouldnt pay RETAIL for that item because they wouldnt make any money!
  • I can’t believe this lady didn’t ask for more for that necklace I mean if she had asked even for £200,000. They would have paid it.
