Opposition leader Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been named Senegal's next president after the country's ruling coalition conceded defeat in a nationwide election.

The 44-year-old is set to become Senegal's youngest-ever president. He'd been in prison less than two weeks before the vote – which followed months of political turmoil in one of Africa's most stable democracies.

In his victory speech, Faye promised to deliver a fresh chapter for the country.

For more on this, we talk to Oluwole Ojewale, Dakar-based regional co-ordinator for Central Africa at the Institute for Security Studies.

Only us the Senegalese people who elected him should tell him what to do. We are his bosses and we pay him, nobody else has the right to tell him what to do.

We hope he succeeds, because it will prove Africa doesn't need old crooks like Biya, Museveni and Tinubu.

Macron was 39 when he became president and no one asked this kind of lame question. You colonialists don't ever seize to amaze the world

  • It’s a big mistake to say that he is a president by accident. What is your justification when People of Senegal chose him over 18 other candidates.

  • God, I love Africa. After reading the comments, I am proud of my fellow Africans. The wake up is great. Let us go forward. I wish the Senegalese all the best. Let's pray for the other African countries to get such leaders who understand how to put their citizens first rather than the people who only care about exploiting us. One Love. One Africa.

  • Being the leader of a country isn't easy. Everyone is watching you, judging your every decision, analyzing your every word. You have to come up with a solution to every problem and the collective fate of an entire society is in your hands. It must be a constant existential nightmare. Still, godspeed, Bassirou Diomaye Faye! It's in your hands now.
