Simbang Gabi is one of the oldest Filipino Christmas traditions, where the faithful gather for nine days of Masses, prayers to the Child Jesus, and festive gatherings — typically held in the early morning or evening.

Filipinos' devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia originated from Our Lady of Peña de Francia, Salamanca, Spain. In the 1680's, the devotion began in Paco, Manila, after the healing of a seminarian was attributed to Our Lady and a shrine was built in her honor. A statue of the Lady was carved in 1710 and is the center of the annual fluvial tranlacion in Naga City.
