Joey Ramone & Lemmy talk Morrissey 1992

Joey Ramone co-hosts an alternative music video show, even though he doesn't express much love for bands like Husker Du and Nirvana, and is joined by Lemmy from Motorhead. Together, they can't resist mocking live musical guest Morrissey (Lemmy pretends he's excited about Morrissey, but when the host says he's sure he's sincere, Lemmy bluntly looks at the camera and says he's not!). The duo also complains - on MTV - about neither being invited to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards, Suzanne Vega ("She's got a cold probably" says Lemmy), and for some reason Joey calls Husker Du "a Ramones ripoff" (he apparently thinks anyone who plays fast is ripping them off?). The referenced videos and live Morrissey performance have been cut, so only the host segments remain, as broadcast in September 1992. The BetaGems channel also has "Lemmy shows you his Halloween treat bag 1988," "Joey Ramone 4-16-92 interview UNRELEASED," "The Ramones 7-15-89 late night television performance," "The Ramones 6-10-95 Movie Medley TV award show performance," and "Ramones 4-9-92 Toad's Place CT UNRELEASED."

BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from the early 1980s into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on Youtube or online.

Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads. In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

“It’s nice to be successful and all but you don’t want to lose sight of your friends… or else you’ve got nothing” - Joey Ramone

I met Lemmy in Vegas. He was just walking down the street I went up to him and told him how much I loved motorhead. He was very soft spoken and gracious and spoke with me for almost 20 minutes! He was a great human being.

I love how Joey turns into a kid as soon as Lemmy comes out.

2 of the coolest bastards to ever walk this earth sitting side by side.

Presenter: 'You did a song called Ramones once, right?' Lemmy: 'Well we did it twice. We didn't get it on the first take.'
  • I saw Ramones in a little outdoor venue in St.Pete, FL called Jannus Landing. In between songs I yelled out, "I love you, Joey!!!". He says back, "Who said that?? You got good taste.". I was fifteen years old. I will never forget that day.
  • Lemmy actually liked punk music (and punks!) When I was a punk he helped me to win the jackpot on a fruit machine in a pub at the top of Portabello Rd. He was really interested in all us (punks) - asked about bands, music etc.

One of the highlights of my life was handing Joey a hardcopy of “Please Kill Me” when I worked at the St Marks Bookshop back in the 90s. He stood at the back counter next to me for about ten minutes, slowly turning the pages and silently reminiscing. I found it incredible that I was watching a man looking at a book and reading words and seeing pictures from an amazing time that he actually experienced firsthand.
  • Kind of amazing to remember that once upon a time, MTV aired programming that was actually interesting with actual musicians who played actual music.

Lem just starts singing Pet Sematary. He loved the RAMONES so damn much.

Lemmy was probably one of the most delightfully charismatic ambassadors of rock and roll to have ever lived and likely ever will. Joey is exactly the kind of guy I figured he'd be at first glance.
  • Joey was such a cool dude - it was so terribly cruel he died so young - RIP

I always liked Joey. I like that he was promoting local upcoming bands that were following in his footsteps here. I remember him hanging out in places like the Conti, checking out the local talent on a fairly regular basis. RIP good sir. You rocked.

This is less a video, more a document. It should be cherished. How wonderful: two charming and funny men talking affably, but whose music would take your face off with its power. Thanks for posting.

Thanks BetaGems, it's archivists like yourselves that are doing a service close to my heart. Anyone who preserves media and/or culture that would otherwise be lost are heroes in my book.

I have to confess that I spent the majority of my teen years fantasising about Lemmy & Joey so seeing them together is incredible
