The Jolly Roger: Pirate Flag

Published 2021-03-23
In this video we discuss the #JollyRoger and what its symbols meant.
This is part of my #Pirate series here on Booktube.

I should have mentioned that prior to the images there used to be just black and white flags (white for surrender, and black as a means of attack).

I've never known anything about this although I have always assumed the Jolly roger we think of most often today is purely related to popular media in more recent times. Happy to know more about it finally.
  • i never actually realised captain hook's ship was called the jolly roger. i love all the different flags, much more interesting than the typical one we all know

There is a very good book I recommend to add to the list, "Honor Among Thieves: Captain Kidd, Henry Every, and the Pirate Democracy in the Indian Ocean" by Jan Rogoziński.
