I've never known anything about this although I have always assumed the Jolly roger we think of most often today is purely related to popular media in more recent times. Happy to know more about it finally.

i never actually realised captain hook's ship was called the jolly roger. i love all the different flags, much more interesting than the typical one we all know

There is a very good book I recommend to add to the list, "Honor Among Thieves: Captain Kidd, Henry Every, and the Pirate Democracy in the Indian Ocean" by Jan Rogoziński.
