I was recently given six Dune books as a gift. I guess I should read them now.

Love dune, love SF. I found your analysis informative and thoughtful. You've gained a new subscriber. PS the artwork in these videos is fantastic!
  • I still need to read Dune. :X But I came here to say that your cover art is so amazing. I am forever in awe of your thumbnails.

Great review. Just a little remark, like Muad'Dib 's likeness to arabic also "Kwizatz haderach" is quite close to the hebrew words for "the way jump" as "a fast way from place to place" or "the next step...."
  • One aspect of this book that I don't see a lot of commentary one, yet is incredibly and inextricably woven into this text is the use of language as a weapon. Not just the stories told by the Missionaria Protectiva, but also the combat language of the houses, and the amazing dinner scene when there are three different levels of communication going on simultaneously.

With special guest a lamp. Dune does indeed rock the casbah. There's some neat history behind this book I wasn't aware of before. You've helped me appreciate this great work all the more.

Really interesting points you make in this. The conservation of resources and environmental points in the book are ones I don't often hear mentioned.

Re-watching the review after the trailer drop. Very well done and hopefully others find this now too given the resurgence of interest in the book. Such a kick ass story !

This is really interesting! I came over from The Poptomist channel, based on your response there. So...here’s a new sub.

Excellent discussion / overview Thomas! Thanks for highlighting such a landmark book, it's definitely one of my all time favorites. So very glad you edited in pics from The Illustrated Dune, as I consider myself lucky to own a copy. Besides the painted plate illustrations, the sketches in it are quite wonderful as well. I have so far only made it up to God Emperor of Dune, but hope to complete the entire series someday. I've also read a couple of the prequels by B.Herbert / K.Anderson and thought Paul of Dune was pretty good (although nothing as intensely weighty as Frank Herbert's series).

Like #248.Yes, a MAJOR and very comprehensive work.  I'd read Tolkien before Dune which helped prepare me for the vast depth of this amazing story.Publishing this book may have been the smartest thing that Chilton ever did.
  • @oberstul1941
Found it! Thanks for the heads-up. And great review :) Waiting for the other in the series :P

I'm nearly finished with Dune, 30 pages to go. Great book. It's the type of book that's hard to put down. I'm going to check out the 1984 movie after I finish the book. I saw the tv mini series last year.
  • @Carrandas
Haven't read it in over fifteen years but I loved it back then. Looking forwards to Dennis Villeneuve's adaptation as he hit it out of the park with Blade Runner 2049.

Can you do a review on The Book of the New Sun series? Great channel by the way.
  • @ChiannaNycole
god damn it, i guess i'll attempt this again. sounds too good, but i think i need to be in the mood for it.
  • @OisCreg
I'm very glad you mentioned the inner monologues used in the book. I felt that its use was quite jarring at times as it was pointing big arrows that the boy would become this great leader. I felt it could have been conveyed with far more subtlety. I put the book down because of it, but with such positive reviews I think I'll have to give it another go.
  • Thanks for a great and insightful review. I really enjoy how you point out themes in the book, but tahe the focus on the story itself. I read Dune a long time ago, maybe it's time to give it a re-read and continue on with the rest of the series.
