You need to master your left hook technique at all ranges, short range, mid range and long range. There are key faults with the left hook that you need to avoid, trying to hit too hard, dropping the right hand and not engaging your legs with the punch.

Your left hook can be powered up by adding in a slip or an inside roll before the punch. Using one of these skills stores energy and leverage to really power up that left hook.

When striking the body with your left hook, your technique needs to ensure that the angle of the shot is the right one - you want the force of the punch to radiate through the opponent's body in the right way.

Doubling up your left hook is another key skill. You can double to the same target (head or body) or you can switch from one to the other. Think about using your slips when doubling up, this particular left hook technique is high energy and therefore needs to bring results.

Finally, my favourite ever left hook, the most perfect left hook technique I've ever seen in a boxing ring - Donald Curry vs Milton McCrory in December 1985. I have no other words other than to say this is the most awesome demonstration of left hook prowess I have ever seen. Here is the link:

If you watch 15 minutes of a guy talking about the left hook that means you love boxing
  • @zibi1239
This is probably the best guide on this blow on YouTube right now
  • @georgejames4206
My favorite left hook is the leaping gazelle punch perfected by Floyd Patterson in the '60's then Mike Tyson's. They shared the same trainer.
  • Excellent vid. One thing Fred does consistently is that he fills in the technique blanks that other instructors sometimes leave. I appreciate those ‘Aha!’ moments.
  • Great video coach! One of the interesting facts about your channel is you focus on pure knowledge rather than prioritizing views which is amazing.

Absolutely brilliant videos! In depth and the knowledge is on another level.. No B.s Fantastic
  • I'm fairly new to boxing, trying to get good tips from everywhere I can. Thank you for the download and your videos, great stuff. Lots of good information to study, absorb, and practice. . I watched the Curry vs McCrory match you linked. Reviewed it in slomo and ran it backwards and forwards many, many times. The best that I can tell is that Curry slipped the jab, and had his weight on his front leg at that point. And then he did what Jack Dempsey describes in his book as a falling step, and unloaded the hook. At least that's what it looks like to this newbie. :) Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'll be watching many more of your videos for sure. Stay well. Cheers!

Really happy about your mentioning of the difference between palm down and palm inwards when throwing the hook on the bag. Thought it was just me who couldn't get the technique right.

  • Vamos! Fran is the man! 🤜🥳🤛 When it comes to left hooks I have always been fond of joe frazier and mike tyson. 🤩
  • @Beast12

My fav one is Joe Frazier punch that knocked out md. Ali & also tyson combo right hook to body & then right uppercut.
  • @BeatThe95
Yes Fran! Watching this with interest for a refresher, this is my fav punch - except right hook for me as i am southpaw. right upper, right hook, step off or roll and left backhand or jab is one of my fav combos. 👌
