Day Trip to SIENA ITALY 🇮🇹 | My Favourite Place in TUSCANY!

SIENA, ITALY: A tour of my favourite place in Tuscany - the beautiful historic city of Siena in central Italy. Join me on a day trip as I wander around the sights and climb the old Tower of Mangia that dominates Piazza del Campo. 🇮🇹 See all of my ITALY videos here → bit.ly/mwt_Italy

I planned a day trip from Pisa to Siena that took about 90 minutes each way on the train (one connection involved) and cost around 20 Euros for a return journey. I had heard a lot of good things about this city and liked the photographs I’d seen so decided to make it a priority on my trip to Tuscany.

Siena is a city that dates back over two thousand years and is packed full of fascinating history and magnificent architecture - much of which has been preserved throughout the centuries. The old city is perched on top of a hill and surrounded by a large defensive wall. I started my day trip to Siena in the old market square.

The Piazza del Campo is a remarkable place with a semi circle of restaurants and picturesque buildings all facing the mighty Pubblico Palace - the most recognisable building in all of Siena. It is adjoined to the Tower of Mangia that stands a crazy 87 metres tall and has survived since the 14th century. I bought a ticket and walked up the narrow steps (all 400 of them!) to gain some phenomenal views from the top - it cost 10 Euros and was worth every cent.

After that exhilarating experience I spent a bit more time wandering around the historic city of Siena visiting the Porta S. Marco Gate, walking along a scenic road or two with lovely views out towards the Tuscan hills and learning about the history of the city including Roman rule, the booming economy during early mediaeval times and the Spanish take over in the 16th century. I also found an old and very grand 13th century water fountain called Fontebranda complete with gothic arches and some marine life lurking close by. Just a few minutes away was the magnificent Siena Cathedral - one of the most spectacular sights in the city.

I totally enjoyed my day trip to Siena and the city quickly became my favourite place in Tuscany - perfect for a day’s sightseeing in historic Italy.

  • Oh wow! Thank you for this tour. I did a culinary study abroad in the summer of 2022 and this video brings back sweet memories. I actually sat on the bench at 6:55 mark, walked where you walked, and enjoyed the scenery just as you did. You are correct - evening time is even better. The best part of Sienna is the people.

Thank you, again so beautiful and excellent music
  • Loved the Romulus and Remus statue in the opening sequence. The views from the tower of Mangia were just stunning, the old rooftops were just gorgeous, but when matched with the gorgeous day you got and the really lovely choice of music - thoroughly enjoyed it, but sorry to hear there was a time limit and that you had to come down earlier than you'd hoped - do you know if that's a COVID thing to help manage numbers of if it's always like that? The panoramic walk was excellent - very well named. The water fountain was amazing, and that shade of blue was very unexpected, and the koi even more so! I can understand why it's your favourite place in Tuscany, it's stunning, has a cool history and didn't feel overrun with tourists either. 🙌

Good one again! I haven't been to Siena but seems like a town rich in history with beautiful buildings - as so many towns in Italy. The tower brought memories of visiting leaning towers in Bologna.

  • Beautiful, i work in duomo and in palazzo pubblico. I want to say that Siena in 13/14 ° century was one the most important italian and european cities and famous was the rivalry with Florence (Guelfi and Ghibellini). Battle Of Monteaperti (Siena Vs Florence) was one of the most important field's batte of the italian middle-age. From the victory of Siena to Florence, was born the original and historical Palio to celebrate that victory.. Your video it's amazing, i'm sorry for my english. It"s not perfect...
