Still can't get over the fact that there are enough people with personal little trains to keep that shop in business. Honestly Joel this is legit my childhood/teen/adult dream ever since I first went to a coal mine

1:09 actual footage of an average day in my life
  • @Weisz
Duuuude I LOVE this thing! Freaking hardcore, so hyped to see the final version!
  • @lawnmowerdude
BIG BIG respect for you for actually asking and not just assuming that tracks are “abandoned” because you haven’t seen a train on them in 24 hours. And even more respect for actually listening and not doing it anyway.
  • I'll note, train guys are some of the nicest people you'll meet. It's a hobby that's allowed me a lot of opportunity from the people I meet. Of note on wheels, I've avoided set screws. The wheels on my equipment are pressed onto the axles, then have weld behind that. Even at 7.5in gauge (Half the size of this), I've seen wheels wander. A belt and braces approach may help.

Oh my gosh I loved going to little America as a kid. When I saw it in the video I was like "no way is that the one I used to go to" but sure enough with a little Google search on maps it was super awesome to see that!

Have I ever mentioned that set screws are evil? Well they are. Cross-drill the hub and shaft for a roll-pin, tapered pin, or bolt and it'll never come loose in the field. (making a clamp hub is better, but much harder to do without a welder or machine tools) Fyi, using brake drums is brilliant. Amazing that they work so well. Should be a lot cheaper to get them finish machined as well.
  • @CodyHovland
This is awesome! I have a design for a solar powered rail car I hope to build one day. Brilliant idea to use the break drums as wheels! There's a few rails near salt lake you can ride with permission. I'm looking forward to the final result. Keep up the great work!
  • You may have solved my wheel problem! I built my own “minecart” a few months ago and settled with pneumatic wheels. It does decently well and holds 40 gallons or 500 pounds of ore from the local gem mine

Joel, if you accidentally get completely hooked on small scale steam engines, I won't hold it against you. That stuff is so ccol. Stay in touch with those folks that showed you the workshop, it'll pay off.
  • @tad2021
It's really nice for once to see a youtuber who want to make thing-that-goes-on-rails start with correct wheel geometry first without learning that the hard way after finishing everything else first.
  • @abrr2000
A set screw is not going to be permanant enough. Based on my experiece with live steam models, even with the screw in a hole, it will still come loose. You're going to need something more permanant, like a pin, a rivet or welding. Glue is an option, but would probably not be enough on it's own.
  • @WaterTimeLapse
So those doodle chaos video's can be recreated in real life!??!!
  • @godlugner5327
That train shop looks freakin cool! Slip in more footage of that for us in the comments 😉
  • @Built_IRL
That electric motor is cheating! You really should have made the rails out of solid gold ;)
