BEST Turtle Habitat Ever? (BONUS VIDEO)

Published 2022-09-08
We know you're all used to our property by now (if you're a regular viewer, that is), but we've got some good friends that do things REALLY well for their animals too. In this brand new video we take a trip to visit our friend Maurice Rodriguez, founder of the Turtle Conservancy. Maurice is an advocate for naturalistic keeping, just like we are, and let us just say, WOW. His massive enclosure has been 20 years in the making and is home to a bale of turtles from North America, India, Japan and more! See this gorgeous habitat up close and personal, meet some interesting species and see what will be coming home with us!

Who is Garden State Tortoise?

However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise. Garden State Tortoise is home to hundreds of animals from all around the world. We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. Here on our YouTube channel you will be able to join us on our animal adventures while learning how to care for, protect, properly identify, feed and even breed many species of turtle, tortoise, snake and lizard. We even work with frogs and salamanders! We hope you enjoy our videos and help us share them with the world so we can continue to educate people of all ages about herpetology.

The kid next door to me found a box turtle on the border of our properties, where I have a huge pachysandra bed that is a haven for all kinds of critters. He intended to keep it as a pet. I tried to educate him on how they were best left to the wild, and he basically told me to mind my business. All day I watched from my yard, making my plans….he had the turtle in a big aluminum bucket, out in the full sun, in the middle of their yard (even after I told him to put it somewhere where the turtle could get out of the sun) When night came, I put on some dark cat burglar clothes, and stealthily crept into their yard…when that kid woke up the next morning, he no longer had a pet box turtle. Considering the way this family didn’t take good care of their pets at all, I did not feel guilty about depriving a young boy the pleasure of reptile ownership. That turtle would have wound up dead if I hadn’t liberated it.
  • Now that's what I call a tortoise breeding environment! As a Japanese, I am very happy that someone from overseas has kept the turtles native to Japan in such a wonderful environment.

Just goes to show that naturalistic keeping can also be the most attractive way to keep these animals. All of those natural water features and plant growth are just beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

Such a fortunate person able to live his life along side species that would express their gratitude if they could. I hope to be able to check back in in twenty years and see the changes. When we talk about humans providing homes for so many wonderful creatures, shouldn’t we also mention occasionally what the plans are after the human is gone? Could you please address that subject to possibly help those of us who care for only several turtles of whatever species? I imagine that the untimely death of a caretaker like yourself or him would also be catastrophic for your animals. But I also worry about my little collection of turtles. Thanks!
  • Beautiful set ups and even more beautiful animals , I strive to have set ups on this level. Thank you for sharing such amazing things
  • Wow; what a setup Maurice has developed over two decades. Amazing that there are a number of very cool refuges for turtles here in our state. 🙂 The variations of T. carolina are so diverse—that black one was insane.
  • Another great video. Sitting outside of work getting ready to go in. Thanks for kicking the day off with some good vibes brother 😎🥇✌🏻🐢🙏🏻💪🏻👍🏻
