After learning of WNBA star Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia, Naama Issachar knew she needed to share her story. While traveling in 2019, Issachar had a layover in Moscow. After authorities found cannabis in her bag, she spent the next 10 months in a facility until she was pardoned by President Putin. Issachar tells NBC News’ Kate Snow that she was held in cells with up to 40 other women. Issachar says that she was given food, but not toilet paper or feminine hygiene products, and was taken to a cell with an open air roof for one hour a day.

  • At no point in this interview did she admit that she was guilty. Regardless of intention, the marijuana in her bag was hers, and she knew it.

This is a perfect example of just how your life can change on a dime! Ive heard this story again and again, perhaps not this exact way, but still, just so suddenly. we should never take any moments of freedom and comfort for granted.

Lie all you want, nobody forgets their stash 🤣 what do you think is the point of it being in the bag, they wanted to bring the party with em but have no accountability and it’s easier to say “I don’t remember or I didn’t know”

If Putin met her mom, that means her family has A LOT of money. And that’s why she got out.
  • @lovemalika
Note to self, never travel to Russia, never have lay over in Russia either. I have no desire to go to Russia anyway.
  • @lgdry90
It’s hard to believe; an adult, (especially a woman) who’s traveling, doesn’t know what’s in their bag! Period. A slither of fabrication will make you question everything else they’re saying.

I’m going to be honest, I thought the prison was going to be far worse than what she described. Aside from not having toilet paper and feminine hygiene products of course. I saw a documentary of someone investigating a Russian prison with men (I think it may have been DW News and a French news channel), and there were correctional officers that were torturing them, pining them to the table while raping some of the prisoners, and several other accusations of physical and sexual assault. So when I clicked on this video, I just envisioned the worst possible scenario. I also dont think it’s smart to parade around saying “what a lie,” towards her sentence. Even if she felt that way, and even if she knew about “political moves”, I would keep it to myself. This way it wouldn’t be heard by Russian officials, and they received it as arrogance and not “positivity”. Then they’ll REALLY want to make an example out of foreign prisoners.

Wow. This woman is a strong person. I don’t know if i could live without toilet paper! But her learning Russian and be kind and positive is a miracle.

I was in Vietnam in the 1990s, traveling with a teacher from Canada. He had parents of students coming all the time to take things to them. One night a little, old lady knocked on the door and handed me this tightly wrapped package. I simply took it without thinking and put it in my luggage. The border guards found it and ripped it open. Fortunately it was only tea in there but it could have been full of drugs! I would never make such a stupid mistake again but I was 20 and naive. The Vietnamese would have executed me and no one would have believed my story.

I’ve never done drugs but always know what’s in my bag when traveling. I don’t understand how drugs are packed accidentally.
  • A man pretending to be a woman to compete in professional sports and then gets arrested for smuggling illegal substances into another country deserves the gulag.
  • @sylkelster
I don't understand how people can be so careless as to not know if they are holding dope in their travel bags. During my drug years, many years ago, I always knew exactly where my stash was at all times and quantity. Never made this type of error and I can't fathom how others do.
  • Let’s reverse the scenario: if a Russian athlete came to the United States with an illegal substance/ or broke the law, what do you think would happen? You think our government would be like “oh well, no big deal, give them a 5 star hotel reservation and $20,000 cash to spend at the mall”
  • @nengxiong9580
If you think you are Americans and you do whatever you want, you are dead wrong.
  • @londonvibz73
This happened to me twice while on vacation. I traveled and found weed when I home. Once in my pocket and another time in my make up bag. The 2nd time I was in shock because I thought I did a thorough search of my things while packing and didn’t find anything. I thank God 🙏🏽it was never detected. I gave up smoking after that🤦🏽‍♀️ life can change in a flash, you can’t take anything for granted!
  • Again, knowing how punitive and severe Russian law is, why would anyone run the risk of carrying even a minimal amount of cannabis or anything? How could she not check her luggage?
  • @1sandinista
Respect other countries laws. Just because you're America doesn't excuse you if you commit a crime. Both she and Griner committed a crime.
  • @RoadTripA1A
How much drugs do you have to be doing to not realize you left drugs in your bag? I just can't imagine forgetting that I am carrying an illegal substance in my bag.
