Black women's history matters in medicine.

Read ProPublica's feature piece on how the US is the most dangerous industrialized country in which to give birth, and racial disparities in maternal mortality make it even worse for women of color: www.propublica.org/article/nothing-protects-black-… And they're seeking your help in understanding the problem. If you nearly died during pregnancy or know someone who died due to childbirth related causes, check out this page for more information: propub.li/2Ae5RMi

At 0:54, a previous version of this chart mistakenly said "deaths per 1,000 live births," but it is "100,000" instead. The error has been fixed.

UPDATE: On Tuesday, April 17, 2018 — New York removed the statue of J. Marion Sims as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s review of city markers that could be deemed “symbols of hate.”

“Black people don’t feel pain”. Right. I’m sure slaveowners were using those whips just for fun.
  • @LisaR._
These black women who were tortured like this.. those are the ones that should have statues.
  • The fact that he could have used anesthesia and didn’t, proved that he enjoyed torturing black women. Just terrible and this devil got a statue?
  • @rosevampire3755
‘Excruciating experimental surgeries’ He tortured them. He just tortured them because he believed they didn’t feel pain/just enjoyed hurting them and claiming they didn’t feel pain.

  • Rest in Power Lucy , Anarcha , Betsey & all the other Black enslaved women who were abused by these evil men!!! We remember you now and WE hold in the highest honor for all you had to endure.

“Poured boiling water on the legs to the negroe” these weren’t experiments or gaining a medical understanding of anything. This was just plain torture, this lack of humanity needs to be taught more and a bigger part of our history. How deep these horrific stories and memories go is appalling, but not as appalling as the fact that this discrimination still continues today, even with the knowledge of these horrors.

I guess they skip this part in history class smh. Brutal.

All those black women who went through torture in the name of “progress” I feel like half the world was destroyed for “progress”. Thank you black women for everything. Sending love and support to the black women still around.

As a Healthcare professional I IMPLORE my people, especially BW, to be your own advocate. Use google and always do your research on your MD and their practice. Always ask questions and if you don’t know what to ask, request ALL the literature pertaining to your illness/ medication/ procedure. That way you have a starting point. Just like we do with anything else needing major repairs- get 2nd opinions. We do it for our cars don’t we? Do not suffer in silence and report those who mistreat you or your loved ones!
  • "Black people did not feel pain or anxiety" Wow they really thought my ancestors weren't human......😢

This broke my heart. What is even more heartbraking, is these horrors and injustices were conveniently cut out of the history books. It's disgusting, that these innocent black women were tortured, and it was swept under the carpet.

I’m in US history and they don’t even talk about slavery.

The fact that they exclaimed that black people had a higher tolerance of pain is ridiculous.
  • @felipevelez156
It's so sad & horrible to hear this stuff. I'm a Black woman and i know i am treated differently as far as pain management. I tolerate severe pain daily and am 59 years old and still am denied pain meds that my White women friends were given upon request!!

I just gave birth to my 4th child, and I’ve had nothing but great experiences with each. I thank God for that 🙏🏿. I know so many other Black women have not had the same. That’s why I love my job as a doula. We are working hard to improve the mortality outcomes that plague our community.
