That pilot had a hell of a War Thunder queue.

The fact that the machine revived itself ONLY to send an already dead pilot was genius to a war that already anialated each other pure genius!

Seeing the mix of 1900s tech with modern-near future tech feels weird yet good

Four years later, this is still one of my favorite CGI animations.

I just had a thought. Those guys we see at the beginning are the generals of the millitary, and their minds are hooked up to the machine in order to create tactics without distractions (sleep, food, bathroom, relationships). At some point, part of the machine that was keeping them alive broke down due to the long and neverending war, and they all died because of the neglect/aging to their bodies.

I could imagine a movie or book based on this starting out with this narration: "Mankind has lost. Not against something else, but against itself. No more do men and women live on planet earth, the only signs of them having existed at all being the ruins, the corpses, and the autonomous machines that still carry out battles for a war long over. There are no characters, no heros to look up to or villains to despise, as they are all long dead. Only the machines, carrying out the biddings of their masters that have long since returned to the soil. Come, watch the last march of the machines. See the final failure of mankind finally set itself right and leave the world in silence."

I'm 67 years old. My generation watched and worried about the younger generation's addiction to video games. And now, we see them use that technology to produce masterpieces like this! Humans always find a way to use their intelligence creatively. Well done, and thanks. Keep it up.

Honestly the saddest part of this is to think of the AI. “What is my purpose?” “To fail to fight a war that has been long lost”

I’ve been re-watching this short and Fortress more times than I can count for the past 6 years.. I really wish we could have a fleshed out version of what happened leading up to this!! I love the tech and setting as well as the whole somber vibe this gives off. I really wish the creator of this made more of it!!

I think this would make a great premise for a game. Your character is revived in this derelict base, the only survivor. You have to piece together what happened in the last 20 years while fighting to stay alive, maybe even fighting your own side, trying to shut down the damaged and now insane AI in the base before it launches a doomsday strike against an enemy that no longer exists. Game play would vary depending on whether you try to reason with, bluff, or outright fight your way to the system's core.

Strange how in the end, the plane saved the one thing it didn’t need: the pilot.

This is gold. I want to see a series about this. Maybe one where there's a cryostasis center containing some survivors that due to power failure has to reawaken the survivors, much like how Fallout 4 started.

Imagine a war that lasts so long no one remembers how and why it began in the first place.

Well given how THIS base was able to send out one more bomber whilst the other side didn't, technically gives them the win in the last war. Get good, scrubs.

0:39 seeing the different helmets, i like to imagine they slowly added exceptional generals to the AI, and as technology advanced, new helmet were invented with each new commander having a more advanced helmet

I don’t think a computer AI could declare a war be over. It would probably recognize it’s lack of personnel and equipment, then send out a request for more, which would never come, so it’d get stuck in a logic loop, sending out calls for help until it finally lost power.
