Federal Government makes ONEWHEELS ILLEGAL?! // A conversation with Attorney Robert Freund

As a relatively older person (53) and physician who has actually ridden a One Wheel for several years (I have even used it to commute), I think the problem is actually in the success of the product. Electric unicycles have been around longer and have exactly the same risks - and there are some completely horrific products available - but something about the platform has kept them from going mainstream. I know of whole families that have One Wheels, I have known one person with an electric unicycle. The more people use One Wheels, the more people see them and become intrigued, the more the utilization grows, the more incidents you will have. This is where I believe the role of the CPSC needs to be precisely defined: the user needs to understand the risks of their actions. A One Wheel is not like a baby crib that has a hidden danger, it is by definition a device with (obvious) risks. At the most, the risks need to be defined, such as the computer controller may quit and pitch you off the device. This should be obvious, but our society today doesn't expect consumer responsibility. What amazes me is how we could be having this discussion with a company like Juul continuing to make billions. By the way, I believe that activities like this are incredibly important especially as one gets older to maintain balance and coordination.

Full support for Onewheels ... I'm late 40's ... loved snowboarding and was hooked the first time I got on a Onewheel. I try to ride daily. I have been hurt, but it was not because of the Onewheel. It will always be an important part of my life going forward.

They are worth every risk i've ever taken. Onewheels have changed my life 1000% for the better. I have traveled to so many different states to ride, places i had never been pre-onewheel. I have met so many amazing people, including Jeff, Bodhi and the entire Float Life crew. (among many, many others)

This is very informative and simple to understand, kudos Jeff! It's clear that Robert really knows his stuff here. I think that an experienced perspective and opinion on this new CPSC situation is helpful for everyone to hear, especially considering how the potential consequences of this can affect the sport we all have come to love so much. You both do an excellent job of explaining the problem at hand, as well as what possible ways this could go.

Getting my son a Onewheel lifted him out of depression from being on lockdown during Covid craziness. He’s put 8000+ miles on his Pint in two years. That’s time NOT spent sitting and staring at a screen. In this household the Onewheel made my son safer.

Thank you Jeff for putting this piece together. It’s sad that the CPSC has to be cagey about what they are upset with. Of course we can fall at anytime. I think we all knew that when we chose to ride Onewheels. Dress for the slide not the ride. I hope this sorts out so Onewheels can still exist. I love riding mine. Thanks.

As someone who almost died via brain aneurysm multiple brain bleeds a hairline fracture that wrapped around my whole skull and multiple hairline fracture surrounding my right eye and was put into a coma due to a singular onewheel accident, they shouldn't be illegal I still ride from time to time but I also always have my helmet on now while riding but they definitely shouldn't be illegal

On day four with The McCosker Tire. The CSPC should require all future Onewheel sales be outfitted. The refinement it has given it has for the first time in my life given me the willingness to stay within a vehicle’s limits. Thank you for your service sir.

As someone who just had knee surgery due to a one wheel fall, I still reccomend them to everyone I meet. Yes the injury sucked and is keeping me off my feet for a couple months, but I will be right back on my board as soon as I'm able to. Thank you for the video and float on 🤙🏼

You know if the federal government thinks it’s bad/dangerous/scary than it is in fact totally awesome!

Highly doubt onewheels will ever get banned. Our kickass community will never allow it 😊 But there may be some annoying rules that come out of this..
