Finding Up When Anxiety Weighs You Down - Louie Giglio

Published 2023-02-26
Pastor Louie addresses the issue of anxiety by exhorting our House to direct our attention “upward.” Anxiety is a massive weight and it drags people down year after year. However, there are offensive tactics we can take, says Pastor Louie. We can “gaze upward,” turning our attention from an issue to a Healer, and experience progress and healing even in a pit of despair.

VERSES // Psalm 42, Psalm 121:1

At Passion City Church, we believe that because God has displayed the ultimate sacrifice in Jesus, our response to that in worship must be extravagant. It is our privilege, and our created purpose, to reflect God’s Glory to Him through our praise, our sacrifice, and our song.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS //

1. How do you answer the question, “To what extent do you rely on a doctor when it comes to the need for healing?”?
2. Pastor Louie shared about the issue of “Text Neck.” Do any of you know any practical exercises or keys to preventing this bad habit?
3. What are your thoughts on the article, “The Surprising Joy of Raising Your Gaze”? Were you surprised to hear about these results?
4. What might physiological and psychological discoveries like these suggest about our faith and the instruction in Scripture?
5. This may be strange to do as a group – and you will need to do this when it’s dark outside - so feel free to skip this step. Take 10 minutes of group time to get up, go outside, “look up” and find the Big Dipper, Little Dipper, and NorthStar.
6. Let’s talk about the process toward lifting our gaze. What will you think of when you choose to “remember the narrative we are in”?
Pastor Louie mentioned listening to “Speak Jesus” about 1,000 times during a difficult season. 7. Do you have a season like this? Do you have a song of praise you played through it?
8. What does it mean to “exercise your right to hope in God”?
9. Where does your “help come from” in times of need? The biblical answer is “The LORD” but try to unpack just how “the LORD” helps you (Ps. 121:1). For instance, did He use a doctor or therapist?

**If your group has reached a place of transparency, ask this final question.

10. Where has “help come from” that was not a healthy source? In other words, who/what have you turned to for help—in the past or recently—that you should not have turned to?

I have been struggling with some pretty severe anxiety for the past 4 months. The ONLY reason I have not gotten into a desperate depression is because I am holding on to the hope of my Jesus.

I've been struggling with anxiety depression . I fall asleep ok but I wake up in the middle of the night usually around 2-3am and I can't go back to sleep. This is going on for the last couple of months. PLEASE PRAY God would give me the sweet sleep the Bible promises to those who are HIS Children. Thank you!

This is so critical to hear. . When hope clears the "darkness" even just a tiny fraction that you can feel the shift you know God has you in the palm of His hand.. Blessings to all.

Having been a christian and worship leader for more than 10 years, I never understood what " the valley of the shadow of death" really meant until i fell into deep dark depression last year. I said it and will keep saying it... pastor Louie, your messages were the strings that attached me to Jesus when I was in that deep dark hole. No one has an idea what depression is until they experience it.
  • Heartsore because I lost my husband, daughter, husband's carer, grandson and after this my daughter-in-law decided to divorce my son. I love Jesus and God is in control. At 83 years I am waiting for the rapture. God bless you.
  • Thank you! Your message is unbelievably encouraging. Just coming out of that dark place of depression.
  • God bless you abundantly Louis Giglio, for being brave enough to bring this message to people who suffer so much, because of the insensitivity and ignorance of people calling themselves children of God, regarding mental health illnesses. It is so true - you don't get healed overnight, or maybe ever, but this does not take away the fact that God is The Healer; and if you don't get healed or at least not completely, and have to do what is necessary to live the best life you can with the resources available, for everyone around you's sake, He is still Immanuel - God with us for eternity.
  • Thank God for this encouraging message! It only takes a tiny ray of God's light to break through the darkness! Worship God even when we don't feel like it! Put your hope in God!
  • Thank you Louie for sharing this with the world and pointing it back to our healer 🙏🏼 .. healing may not come today, tomorrow or weeks from now, but God is STILL in the story ❣️
  • Pray for your enemy. It's in the Bible. Rejoice. Evil one day will leave forever. In Jesus name, rejoice
  • Love this guy. I reckon there's no other topic that hits home more than this one!

Thank you for this reminder 🙏. I too didn’t know what it meant to go through depression, until I was engulfed in this depth and darkness. Nothing stood a chance except the powers of healing and rebuilding from inside out done by my savior Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
  • Yes - worship was the key for me and is now all I listen to 🙌🏻
  • The song "through the fire" by Jason Crabb, or the Crabb family, helps me when I'm down. I play it over and over.

Always good to hear words of wisdom from Pastor Louie. Thank you for the words of inspiration
  • Thank you for this hope-filled message on a very real “thing” that many God loving, God fearing people are experiencing and often times find it impossible to talk about.
  • Amen!! What a message given with so much reality, understanding, encouragement, love, sympathy…Jesus is greater, indeed!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
