This Chinese Island Holds the Secrets to Beijing’s Massive Naval Expansion | WSJ

Published 2024-05-29
China is expanding its naval bases on the tropical island of Hainan in the South China Sea. Two of Beijing’s most important naval facilities, Yulia and Longpo, have undergone dramatic expansion to accommodate a growing fleet of vessels and to provide a home for China’s new sea-borne nuclear deterrent.

WSJ spoke to defense analysts who say the upgrades point to Beijing’s preparations for a possible conflict over Taiwan.

China can do what ever they want in Hainan Island. It belongs to china.😅😅
  • @akiyamayusuke
I don't think you can call it "Naval Expansion" unless China has hundreds of oversea military bases and conducts regular "freedom of navigation" sails in the Gulf of Mexico.

Fun fact for Americans who don't know Hainan: Hainan is a province island WITHIN China's territory. So this video is like saying: "How dare the US expand its military bases in Nevada?!"
  • @yonghuachen7075
The US often claim threatened by Chinese army. But the aircraft or warship encounters often happen at China's doorsteps.

How can China's navy challenge the U.S. navy in the South China Sea? China's navy is not on the coast of the United States.
  • @chengavitch10
How close is this island to the shores of mainland China and mainland US? Why is this a challenge to US navy on the other side of the globe?
  • @38josue91
The US didn't adequately handle its unipolar hegemony in the 1990s and early 2000s, now they are grappling with the consequences of a multipolar world. I think it is fair for every country to be prepared to defend themselves and to have strong local influence.

For the past decade it was a known fact that China was reinforcing its naval forces by integrating military, naval & submarine base on Hainan island as it has strategic value… why is that even surprising? China 🇨🇳 has 1 billion citizens & ensuring their territorial waters remain as such for the future is normal for every sovereign nation.. 🙄
