George Toca had just turned 17 when his best friend, Eric Batiste, was shot and killed by his partner during a botched armed robbery in New Orleans in 1984. George was arrested and convicted of the crime because an officer from their neighbourhood, who knew Eric and George, assumed they were together.

The two white witnesses spent less than a couple of minutes with the actual perpetrator. Their description of the gunman looked nothing like George but he was nevertheless identified when police showed his photo to them. This is his long and winding journey to be rightfully released from a 30-year incarceration, thanks to the help of those at The Innocence Project.

I dont believe there is a greater tragedy in a man's life than this. It's heartbreaking and unacceptable that this happens! Im crying, his mamma saw her 17 yo boy enter prison and then she saw a 47 yo man come out. 30 yrs of his life robbed, what a devastating pain!
  • How crazy justice is in USA. Feeling sad for that gentleman being wrongfully imprisoned. May God bless his heart

The sad truth that they did not survive their experience. Yes the person is freed and exonerated, but their personality is completely different, you can’t just continue your life after this.

Best of luck to him. He seems like such a nice person. God will bless him . He looks much younger then his age (God has blessed him ) he should have no problem finding love . He deserves all that happiness.
  • There seems to be an endemic tendency to ignore inconsistencies in evidence provided/given and all told a celebration of lies just to get accolades and rewards for convictions.

Damn the state of Louisiana and those who administrate it straight to hell!!! I hope all those who perpetrated this injustice on that kid suffer the pain 10 fold. That would be justice. One thing, he is lucky to still be a handsome guy at almost 50. He doesn't look his age.

Id love to know more about the English lawyer and how she came to be working with this fantastic group
  • Cases like these give me hope to keep at the fight! Obadyah Ben Yisrayl is STILL incarcerated 31yrs later as the 1990 Indiana Shotgun Killer. He sits in the Pendleton state penitentiary still fighting for his innocence.

In a way I can't help but feel bad for this man. I strongly believe that he was handed a raw deal from his incarceration at 17 to his final release out of prison. Because this so called "justice system" handed him a raw deal under a stigmatized condition of release is not right in my opinion. They knew full well what to do to cover themselves from prosecutorial and judicial injustice and misconduct and held his freedom over his head like a bunch of bananas over a barrel of monkeys and really gave him no choice but to settle for a stipulation of guilty and not get compensation (which he deserves anyway) for his freedom. Even though he's free from prison physically, he is still NOT free mentally and emotionally. Why? Because he's going to continue to look over his shoulder for the penal system to bust down his door at any given time NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES and re-incarcerate him again for little or no reason. I truly believe he's been handed a raw deal. I wish him the very best that life can compensate for him.

Wow. Thanks to God. His family and the legal support. This was truly a difficult one to go through alone.
  • The system is more interested in convictions than it is in justice.

Agreed, that you would never believe something is true unless you live it. The last decade disturbingly opened my eyes to that fact.
  • It happens I no fact twice incarcerated for a crime my brother commited and another time I can't even speak about. it affected me that badly
