Corvette C8.R GTE Race Car: Accelerations, Loud Downshifts & Flat-Plane LT6 V8 Sound!

After the 9X8, the second car that I was most interested in during the Monza 6H was the Corvette C8.R. This because I've never had the chance to properly record the American GTE-class car, even its previous iterations, plus I was curious to hear and see in person the new 'controversial' Corvette generation in action. In fact the C8 is the first production Corvette to have a rear mid-engine configuration instead of the typical front-engine layout. Stylistically I really like how the car looks in its racing form, but still I have to metabolize the look of the 'standard', road legal car.

The second point of discussion is of course its sound, at least on the C8.R and on the Z06 version.
These two cars adopts a new designed 5.5-litre, naturally-aspirated DOHC V8 engine, called LT6, which departs from the traditional pushrod valves and crossplane crank of the previous generations of Chevrolet small-block engines by featuring dual overhead camshafts and a flat-plane crank. And this last detail makes the C8.R to have a more 'European' sound instead of the typical cross-plane roar we were used to with the C7.R, C6.R etc. It actually remembers me of a low revving Ferrari F430 GT2/GTC but also it has the tone of a more recent 488 GT3/GTE. I really like those explosive and loud downshifts.

Corvette Racing developed and fielded the C8.R in the IMSA SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) class starting with the 2020 season. The car was built to LM GTE specifications as per GTLM rules. In 2022, the GTLM class in the IMSA SportsCar Championship was replaced by the GT Daytona Pro (GTD Pro) class using GT3 machinery. As Corvette did not have any GT3 cars on the market (with the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R not debuting until 2024), the C8.R was allowed to run in the GTD Pro class using a GTD kit. This year for the first time Corvette Racing also entered the WEC for the entire season.

  • I recall the first time I heard (felt) the C5.R at Laguna Seca. I wasn't sure about the C8.R, but I've warmed to it over time. Corvette Racing has been (and I hope continues to be) one of the most fan friendly teams at races. I kind of wish they had left the IMSA series for the WEC with both cars, as I see the step down to the GTD Pro as a slap in the face of us ALMS fans. It is not Corvette Racings fault that the GTLM class has less competition. Ford, Dodge, BMW, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Ferrari, all used to race in the GTLM class, and some of them only commit to 3 year programs, and when they win Le Mans or a class championship, they fold up and leave. Corvette Racing, on the other hand, has stood the test of time over the years. How is it that they have stayed consistent when others can't seem to commit for extended periods of time, even with factory teams? I'll never forget seeing Corvette Racing at Sebring in 2007. During the autograph session, there was a massive line at their team trailer. Despite the fact that the autograph session was coming to the end, the drivers insisted on staying so that everyone had the chance to meet them. That endeared them to me forever. No other team that I know (and certainly not in NASCAR) has ever done that. Because they have endured, I will endure with them as a fan for life.
  • I never thought I'd see the day when I see the Compuware factory Corvette c8.Rat monza I still miss the rumble of the c7.R and it's deep sound around the world especially at le mans awesome video bozzy keep it up
  • I've heard this thing at the 6 hours of Monza, and it's a lot louder than I expected
  • Don't fear people, Cadillac has your American V8 sound covered with their 2023 LMDH 🤗
  • Hearing it in person is a big difference compared to on video. I never liked the Vette's sound on video but was pleasantly surprised when I heard it at Spa this year.
  • I love this Corvette. Thanks a lot for sharing it.
  • Of course it will never sound as good as the older generations, but hearing theses pops in person during the downshifts is something special
  • YEEESSSS!!!! My dream team! I’m so glad that they won the 6 Hours of Monza this past weekend. They did a really good job. My future goal one day is to race for the team itself.
  • From the front, it still looks like a Corvette, but from the rear, its hard to tell it apart from the Ferrari. Miss that C6/7 growl though. It definitely does not sound like an "american v8" like the old car. Still, even as a Tifosi, I'm glad that Chevy is investing in racing and happy they are competitive. This car will only get better as its developed. Great shots and sound as always Bozzy!
  • The downshifts from the corvettes started to hurt my ears at Le Mans. So loud
  • This Vette is always in beast mode! Ultra fast, looks and sounds great as well. Thanks for this one.
  • Sounds awesome looks amazing another brilliant video Bozzy
  • @jvyyyy222

  • Sono parziale come Americana, ma la 'Vette e cosi adorabile....another fabulous work!
  • @colacoke4945
Have listened its downshift in Fuji Speedway WEC race. It’s just like a gun shooting your heart. And it is absolutely the car having the most amazing sound among all attendants cars. Love it too much
  • Great footage, a given with Bozzy but this ones not a patch on the old pushrod C5R and C6R. That was utterly unique!!
  • Dude is driving the crap out of it! Hell yeah!
