Mercedes’ delight at a surprise 1-2 at the Belgian Grand Prix quickly turned to anguish after George Russell was disqualified from a hard-fought win.

Mercedes winning a Formula 1 race is no longer the absurd fantasy it was a few months ago but its initial one-two in Spa was still unexpected.

The shock value of that was quickly surpassed when the stewards threw winner Russell out of the race just hours after the flag, ensuring team-mate Lewis Hamilton won after all.

We explain where Mercedes' pace came from and why Russell was disqualified.

  • No wonder Toto didn't have the slightest bit of happiness when George crossed the finished line. He knew one of his engineers fucked up George's car.

Toto had a straight face when GR crossed the finished line. I think he already knew it but didn't want to spoil the moment for GR. that was so unfortunate

Bizarre lack of attention to detail by Mercedes. Would they have assumed they could gain that by picking up rubber at the end?
  • @MrSpeedyAce
Toto definitely kicked someone’s ass after the race
  • @justinm.1
That probably explains the 2 things I was thinking about: 1) Toto had a deadpan expression after Russell crossed the finish line 2) How Russell managed to keep Hamilton behind...I guess he was using more fuel to do just that, as well as having a lighter car, otherwise Hamilton would've got past him a lot sooner & easily
  • @mkgunnells2987
Someone forgot that the cars don't do a cool down lap after this race but rather go directly back up the pit lane. No chance to pick up rubber.
  • @Aaron-is9xo
No ones gonna mention how the team told the FIA that they drained the fuel when in fact that had not.
  • @Coconutscott
That is brutal for George, but thems the rules...

Hamilton's win isn't a shock - another few laps and the race was his. What is a shock is Mercedes making such a basic weight error.
  • Suspicious on lap 44 when Hamilton, who is on tires 16 laps newer than Russell, asks on the radio: "How fast should I be? Can I attack Russell or not?" And the team responds: "Come closer, just come closer"... Phew, they can't find a way to put Russell ahead of Hamilton. Lewis visibly upset. He was clearly able to overtake Russell but never attacked him, he just stayed behind in the DRS zone, losing time and Piastri almost took the position away from him.
  • I don't even like gorj that much but seeing him lose 2 race wins in the same season for things he hasn't done wrong is gut-wrenching. The man lost his first win just like this too. Feel bad for jorg.

How much does tire pickup weigh? : The F1 community needs to know!

Who else noticed that Scrutineering official standing behind Toto in one of the Mercedes garage panning shots during the TV coverage? I had a suspicion then that something might be up with one of the Mercs. Shame since George did so well. Gutted for him.
  • @CharlesBordy
I mean, again, by the time Lewis was called in for a second stop, they knew the one stop would work, and could have had Lewis stay out too. My guy even said the tires were fine literally one lap before he was called into the pits to respond to LeClerc, who hasn't been a real threat since Monaco, so yeah, it feels like Mercedes got in his way to give George a shot. You've also got so many people working on these cars, so it's hard to see how they didn't know it'd be underweight. This all just kinda reeks of dirty business at Mercedes.
  • @suhdud4646
Eng: The car is going to be underweight... Toto face: hold my 1.5kg bag of tricks, Its only a problem if we get caught!
  • @MrDanMeman
Hamilton was upset because his team didn't tell him that George wasn't pitting and he was way back told to be racing Piastri and Leclerc.
  • @davemis40
1.5. Kgs is a significant weight on an F1 car … what was missing from the car vs Hamilton’s car ?
  • @BenTrem42
RFE: State more clearly and earlier DQ because of under required weight!!!
