    They recognized that single piece of wood as the one serving their needs best, and ignore the other less desirable wood attached to it.

    That's pretty much every house in southern California. I have seen houses where the wood was completely hollow.

    What joist? Sorry yo have to suffer them, My house is Swiss cheese also. It was because the flower bed was too high to exterior wood and they build tunnels.
