How to Say Too Much in Two Minutes (see the text below)

To the MTA Board 4/26/23

The NYU Study says you spend more on consultants than on construction. But in their own work the authors exhibit the same type of 'dimensional incognizance as the MTA. Railroading Culture in the United States is dead. No one finds it interesting, so you wave your hand and expect something to get built.

Compare the Third Track Project with the New York City Subway of 1904. Both are over 9 miles long, and took about four years. But THEY had only steam shovels and stiff leg derricks to accomplish the task.

There's no grade separation at Mineola, and that grading scheme looks like something out of the 19th Century. The mainline minimum radius of East Side Access is about one fifth that of the East River Tunnels built 110 years before. And the insulting denigration of the Rockaway Beach Branch continues.

The Rockaway Beach Branch is essential for getting additional capacity west of Jamaica, but as your capacity issues are playing out in public you go and vandalize part of the solution. The sixth track embankment at 63rd Drive requires you stewardship. You've failed to answer my Information Request filed March 21. My FOIL Request has been denied, and I'm asking you please for a fulsome explanation.

In Phase II of the Jamaica Project you intend to box it in completely, with a gigantic bridge having no legitimate purpose, etched in stone and steel of practical permanence. And just as your contractors want to conduct work changes "On the Fly" you want to run cross-platform transfers as an ad hoc improvisation.

This pattern of behavior needs to be broken. That's why Janno was brought in, and I'm hoping he's up to the task.
