Christian Basics Series 5 – Fall

The fall of mankind (‘the Fall’) is part of the doctrine of the Fall. Having been tempted by an angelic creature, Satan (‘the devil’) had rebelled against God, tempting Adam and Eve to disobey God and sin against Him. The outcome is losing their favourable standing with God, since they are punished with death and separation from God. While God pronounces a curse on Satan and the earth, He does not curse Adam and Eve. In fact, in rendering judgement on mankind, God also simultaneously promises redemption (in the Protoevangelium – the ‘first gospel’ of Genesis 3:15). With this original sin as part of the Fall, the reality of evil sets in motion the total corruption of everyone born thereafter, except Jesus Christ.
