On August 1st, 1996, Author George RR Martin released the first book in his new fantasy series. This book was titled “A Game of Thrones.” While his new book series did gain popularity in the fantasy community, Martin never anticipated that his story would become a global phenomenon 20 years later. Watching Game of Thrones each week wasn’t like watching any show, it was an event. You had to tune in each week to check in on Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and dozens of other characters. This show wasn’t just popular. Marvel is popular, but people aren’t calling the Marvel movies some of the best movies ever made. At its peak, Game of Thrones was in the conversation for the best show ever made. This was the conversation for many years. Once the show got into its later seasons like seasons 5, 6, and 7, people started to notice a decline in the quality of the series. But it wasn’t bad enough for people to declare this show past its prime. That may have been the case narratively, but each easy became more popular than the previous. Game of Thrones wasn’t like the walking dead or the office or other shows that overstayed their welcome. Entering the final season, the show was at its peak popularity. Conversations were still held as to whether or not this show was the best show ever made. And it was unlikely that the final season of the series would change that, right? Right? It took just 1 month and arguably 4 episodes to turn the conversation around Game of Thrones from being one of the best shows ever made, to it having one of the worst endings ever made. Rarely and I mean rarely are there movies or seasons of shows that are borderline universally hated. Even movies that are passionately hated by a lot of people like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Batman v Superman have a significant fanbase. Trust me, I would know. But when it comes to the last season of Game of Thrones, the amount of disdain this season received was something I have never seen. If I polled 100 random people who have watched this show, I would bet thousands of dollars that at most, 1 person would say they kinda enjoyed the season. How did this happen? How did a show that was in the conversation for the best show ever made earn this reputation for the worst ending ever made? How did a show so popular piss off so many people? How did 2 men who were showrunners for the most popular show in the history of TV get clowned so hard by fans they are widely viewed as awful storytellers. Well, let’s start from the beginning, and I mean the beginn

*I made an error in the video. A song of Ice and Fire sold 12 million copies prior to 2011, not 90. I apologize for this mistake
  • One of the funniest and deppressing parts of the whole S8 situation is that they rushed the ending because of their Star Wars deal and then that didn't happen either. So Dumb and Dumber ruined their reputation for absolutely no reason.
  • It breaks my heart that HBO were literally begging them and willing to throw as much as possible to this show to keep it going but nooooo Star Wars and Disney were calling. What utter fucking betrayal.
  • One of the more sad aspects of it is that rewatching game of thrones feels like an impossible task when you know how badly they botch the ending

Dany going mad in the end sounds like something that George RR Martin would write, but the series would have probably needed 3 more seasons to develop this character development.

Clearly, George R.R. was right. The series needed to have 10 seasons in order to wrap it up properly. The ending was so rushed and it screwed up the legacy of the series.
  • Jamie’s character obliteration is the most heartbreaking moment in the whole show to me
  • What was so surprising about Ned Starks death was that Sean Bean was the biggest name at the time in the show. Much of HBOs marketing put his name front and center like it was his vehicle. Then they killed him. It was daring and surprising. You really were left saying where do we go from here? His death opened up all types of possibilities. For those not familiar with the books.

Can you imagine a major multi billion dollar studio being so involved in a show that they pretty much told the creators "go ahead and finish, we've got you," and the creators said "Nah, we'll wrap it up?"
  • @awhr0350
The fact that D&D were fans enough to know who Jons mother was and still destroyed the show is kind of surreal
  • It’s so sad that it’s one of the few cases where the studio wanted to be more faithful while the writers wanted a paycheck

The whole Benioff and Weiss guessing the Jon Snow twist is like ironic fate. The whole reason George was so excited they guessed it is because he likes to have his twists guessed. He carefully sets it up so those who are huge fans have things to guess and speculate, and when the reveal is given it makes it all more gratifying. Them guessing it meant they cared about the series that much. Benioff and Weiss for some reason, despite this being the reason they GOT THIS JOB, seem to think anyone guessing your twists is a measure of bad writing. It's amazing how they don't realize that being able to guess a twist is the sign of not only a good writer, but a dedicated fanbase. You couldn't write a more 'hubris leading to their downfall' trope if you tried.

I'll forever be blown away that there were no White Walkers killed during the battle of Winterfell. No fights whatsoever. Only the Night King(which exploded them) and Wights. He has a personal guard of a dozen or more White Walkers and none of them fight.
  • Another tiny clue in Jon’s parentage is when Ned lies. He lies about commanding his wife to kidnap Tyrion, and he falsely confesses to treason, demonstrating that he is absolutely willing to lie in order to protect his family at the drop of a hat.

The Prince that was Promised…but ultimately meant nothing! Winter came and went in an episode and Dani’s character went crazy in 5 minutes, Arya killing the Night King, Jaime’s character arc being pointless, Jon Snow turned into an idiot, Cersei killed by rubble and Bran becoming king…thanks D&D…you ruined everything!
  • Also would have been poetic for Jaime to kill the Night King because he would have been saving the boy he himself tried to kill years ago.
  • @silverfoxchain
I cant believe the actors actually went through the last season. Their expressions in the interviews was a huge sign.
  • I totally agree that R+L=J was an awesome plot twist and I was so excited to see what happens when it was revealed. The show made it seem like it was nothing
  • If Jaime had killed night king he would again be called the 'Kingslayer' but in a good way and that's so poetic for his character. The potential that got wasted in this show is insane.

I will never forget the thrill and excitement this series was able to evoke in me. The Red Wedding, Ned Stark's death, the constant feeling that good might not prevail. Each episode felt like a feverdream. Now the only thing that comes into my mind when GoT is mentioned is the the urge to suppress my memory of thos show. The first 4 season were the best things I have ever seen and felt like an internationale moment shared with so many people. Because of the ending I will not rewatch them anytime soon. I am however also extremely thankfull to D&D for beeing the first Producer to create a show beeing able to be - for a few seasons - the best show we might have ever seen.
