Gettysburg | Civil War Historian Gives Guided Tour

Published 2021-11-17
Hop in the car and join the American Battlefield Trust's very own Garry Adelman for this full tour of the Gettysburg National Military Park. The video highlights the same route that visitors experience when trekking the battlefield, and includes walking stops at the iconic sites of Confederate Avenue, Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge. There is no replacement for being able to see America's Hallowed Grounds in person, but we hope this serves as a worthy option for the virtual experience. #gettysburgdrivingtour

We encourage you to visit the battlefield and to book your very own Licensed Battlefield Guide, who will tailor a tour to your specific interests. To learn more, visit: www.gettysburgfoundation.org/tour-the-battlefield#…

Fantastic presentation and tour! My Great Grandfather, there with the Pennsylvania, was kicked in the knee by a mule on the second day of battle and could not fight. On the third day, the majority of his regiment died. I’m convinced I would not be here if not for that mule.

This video should be required watching for all American History courses. I understand Gettysburg 1000 times more than I did before watching. Thanks Gary.
  • I absolutely love the way Gary Adelmen tells the history of Gettysburg! He makes it come to life almost and makes you not want to miss a thing! Well done Gary!

My father and I toured the battlefield in 2000. Dad was a WW11 10th MTN combat vet. When we drove to Little Round Top it was during a thunderstorm. To have have the flash of lightening and the bang of the thunder was so eerie...brought him back to Italy and his bond to soldiers of another generation. Love you dad and what your generation sacrificed for this country.
  • Garry this is quite possibly the best guided tour of the overall battle I’ve ever seen! Bravo sir! I would suggest that everyone start with this video and then watch your other Gettysburg videos to drill down into the individual battles. Again, well done sir! Excellent work!

I stepped on those sacred grounds in the early 90’s on a cold winter day. Knowing my great grandfathers and ancestors were all there was extremely touching.
  • Years ago, my wife hired a guide at Gettysburg for us as my birthday present. It was one of the best presents I ever received. When we stopped people would gather around to hear our discussion about each stop. It was a discussion and not just a lecture and for the short time he seemed part of our family. A guide is definitely a great investment and can make the battle and battlefield come alive for you!

Garry Adelman at his very best! He is superb at giving you a feel for the enormous sizes of the armies and the battlefields. This might be the best 2 hours I've ever spent on a "history lesson". At one point I thought I had watched this video for about 20 minutes and it had actually been 75 minutes! Time flies when you are enjoying something. I learn so much from this brilliant, entertaining man.

Garry's enthusiam is positively infectious. I've done the auto tour at least ten times and I found myself completely engaged the entirety of this video. He's completely right, you need to experience it for yourself. The sheer scope and breadth of the battlefield is incomparable. It takes your breath away just stepping foot onto such hallowed ground.

My great grandfather, Solomon Walter Gedney, attended the 25th, 50th and 75h reunions at Gettysburg where he fought. He died in his 90’s in 1941 soon after the 75th. He was buried in his uniform. I’m very proud of him and someday I will see Gettysburg. I’m sure he was one of the last surviving actual combatants. Thank you so much for this tour.

it’s so weird living and growing up in gettysburg and out of no where see videos like this. it’s a reminder how cool and historic gettysburg actually is.
  • What a great tour guide. The enthusiasm this gentleman brings to the stage almost brings the battle to life in that you can almost see the armies marching through the fields of battle as he describes the scene.
  • @edriver7742
Garry!! They should make a statue of you in your car, and put it there with all the generals, that's incredible!!! well done
  • I’m in Gettysburg. I used this video today as I drove the Auto Road. Gary does a fantastic job !

Gary is the absolute the best in the business . Nobody explains it better than him . From the age of 10 and was at Gettysburg been a buff ! Now 73 are leaning more and I thank YOU !
  • @ramona14220
Gary must be steering the car with his knees for half the tour. Great video.
  • Sir, it was a privilege and honor to experience and capture the horror of what transpired that left me trembling at times, yet embrace the nostalgia of the glorious spirit of courage, bravery, honor, sacrifice, and the commitment for the preservation of a nation in every moment of this video. Thank you for sharing in depth your knowledge of the Battle of Gettysburg. May brethren on American soil never endeavor to such discord, hatred, division, and blood shed ever again. Long live the Republic!
