Ok so Parasite follows the Kim family who end up infiltrating a wealthy elite family under the guise of being something they're not. They very much have a parasitic relationship with them and this is hinted at early on in the movie when we're first introduced to them.

Living in a basement home we catch them in despair as they realise that the person who's wifi they'd been piggybacking off of had now put a password on it. However they manage to pick up a signal in the bathroom which means they can use the free wifi from a copy shop down the road. They're very much parasites of that wifi connection but the similarities to a lowly life form don't stop there.

We catch them folding pizza boxes and they're very much in a symbiotic relationship with a fast food company who require lots of hands in order to do this but they don't have the money to take on full time members of staff. The Kims don't do the job probably and a quarter of the boxes are unusable but the pizza company have no other option which the Kim's somewhat play upon.

Not long after we watch workers spraying pesticide in the street and this is commonly used to kill bugs and parasites. It blows into their basement home and this basement home of course foreshadows some of the reveals that we get in the movie.

After realising their phones have been cut off Chung-Sook asks her husband Ki-taek what his plan is but we never really get an answer. Later on in the film Ki-taek reveals that it's better to not have a plan as plans always go wrong and if you don't have one then nothing bad can happen.

This some what juxtaposes the end of the film in which the son Ki-Woo says that he's making a plan to go to university, become successful  and then buy the house so that his father can finally come out of the basement.

I've seen a lot of back and forth over the film, namely whether this ending is something that happens and we'll discuss why it's pretty bad news for the family later on in the video.

Now with the success of Squid Game I thought I'd revisit some Korean classics that really show why the country is currently leading the way when it comes to TV shows and Movies. They just seem to be adept at creating outstanding original stories that are layered with social commentary and Parasite is no different.

The oscar winning film is layered with hidden details, things you missed and a lot of clues that hint towards the eventual reveals that I wanna breakdown in this video.

The thing is that all members of the family have the qualifications and skills for those jobs but they don't have a "diploma", "status" to actually access those jobs because that's all people care about, they only care about papers and "connections". Even having a diploma or certification is not enough, they still need the "connection recommendation".

In the beginning of the movie, the mom comically said "you should have brought food" when they received the stone from son's friend. This draws parallel to when Jessica could have brought food to the man in the basement but instead the son brought the stone, cause the following murders.

One big detail I caught was that when the rich mother and poor father drive home from the grocery store, the father overheard the mother say that the rain (the same rain that flooded and destroyed the Kim’s family’s home) was a blessing because it cleared the grass or something of that sort. An eye-opening thing in regards to people of the higher class becoming blind to the harsh realities the lower class face.

On an upbeat note, Id like to think that the reason the rock doesn't float at the end is because, unlike previous hollow promises, symbolised by the rock which floated, the promise that he makes to buy the house is truly meant and that is why the rock is real in that scene

7:18 ngl i probably would have had a seizure too if i saw that in my house so i dont blame this kid at all, literally one of the most terrifying things ive seen
  • I believe the mother playing the current housekeeper who kicks the other down the stairs is a reminder that hierarchy is human nature and those at the bottom who climb up the social ladder are often just as likely to maintain their status by treating the others badly, keeping them from rising.
  • This movie had a lot of “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka vibes. Down to the very end in how certain characters switched roles with others.
  • @tomosheax
you could even say that the rock statuette has a staircase-like structure to it

I love how this movie explored a different side of an overused topic (rich vs poor). We've seen so many films that cover the black & white, such as the evil corrupted rich taking advantage of the poor. While that's a sad truth, it's only a portion of the real power dynamic in our society. We often overlook how the poor is always fighting with each other when they could be pulling their heads together and help each other. We see so many examples through everyday crime news (all the hate crimes, neighborhood crimes, small business/convenience store robbery). The reality is, most middle-elite class in modern society are just minding their own business. Sure, there's a portion of rich people who are truly evil. But really, the rest of them simply don't give a shit about what's going down in the lower class community. Their main interest is on which company they should invest on next. That means they also have no business in directly harming the poor. At the same time, they casually look down on the poor people living in the same city while also casually donating money to Unicef.
  • Your introduction is a piece of art.. I love the comparison with “snowpiercer”, from the back bottom paying blood all the way long to the front, yet this one is very local, that only Koreans could understand some of the slang phrases.. I agree the end is just a fantasy

I'm a big fan of Bong Joon-ho films from recent years. Loved parasite and watched sooo many 'what you missed' videos after watching the movie BUT STILL you added new information I haven't seen in other videos. Thanks for always being so thorough!

11:07 changes in light will almost instantly cause the pupils to react, if someone has been in dark for too long the instance that light shines, the pupils will be pin pointed to the size of a grain of sand! that's why doctors swing a flashlight back and forth to detect if the brain is still functioning and alive, and that's a very rapid movement!

I also checked out this movie after finishing squid games, and it was phenomenal. Was originally disappointed that you didn’t have any videos that covered it. Until now!
