From Renly's tent to Frey's Twins, Catelyn witnesses the deaths of two young, handsome, and youthful kings. As the pie is being served to Walder Frey, Margaery shouts to announce that the mighty pie has arrived. While everyone is shocked by Joffrey's death, Stannis marches south in hopes of taking Winterfell. He fell before Winterfell, as Balon did on Pyke on the Iron Islands.

"We'll end this war in a fortnight." Narrator: "They would not, in fact, end this war in a fortnight."

I always just think, if Renly had been more like Kevin Lannister, knowing his place, he and stannis could have taken all the power

Stannis death in the show is a crime against humanity

"Give me something for the pain and let me die." "Together we could end this war in a fortnight." "Mother." "It's nothing." "Go on, do your duty." "What kind of ironborn loses his senses during a storm?" [silence] "I'm the man who killed Jaime Lannister." "I don't like this." "They don't get to choose." ~ Last words of every king and queen in Westeros.
  • None of them died in battle, all of them died kinda the same way, 4 got betrayed, 1 was executed after a battle...

People forget that by book 3, Balon died as well. The show runners just kind of forgot about Balon (which is unsurprising given their track record) so he got put off until season 6. The line “just now kings are dying like flies” spoken by Tyrion after news of the Red Wedding reaches King’s Lansing doesn’t make as much sense. In ASoS, Robb and Balon died in very close proximity, whereas in the show . . . it’s just Robb? Yes Renly was killed but much earlier on. Also they’re saying the war ended by Joffrey and Margarey’s wedding, as if Balon just fucked off when in theory he should still be around.
  • Renly: Wow I did not expect that. Also that was really fast Robb: NOOOOOOO!!!!!! Joffrey: laughing and giggling with joy .... I'm not crazy. Stannis: Look how they massacred my Mannis. Balon: Finally. This piece of sh*t wasn't worth anything.

I love how Cersei wants to yell at Tyrion, but then she sees Joffrey and just let's it go to be with her son in his last moments. And also Joffrey didn't deserve to die at the arms of his mother, the only woman who loved him. He should have gotten something worse.

I love how so many shows depict throat-cuts to be this instant method of death. In reality, the resulting death can take minutes and is a horrible way to go, which seems odd since GOT certainly doesn't hold back in other ways!
  • @RealBono
I never realized Balon outlived all of them, that's actually hilarious but it does make sense. He stayed in the Iron Islands through all of it, which was probably the safest place for him until his brother showed up.
  • @Sashi_Mee
Technically It can't be the war of the 5 kings since Renly died before Balon declared himself king

There never really was a "War of Five Kings". Instead, there were three concurrent, but separate wars: 1. The War of Baratheon Succession, a three-way conflict between Joffrey (and, later, Tommen) and his two uncles, all claiming to have inherited the Iron Throne after Robert's death. This war ended with Stannis's death and Tommen's victory. 2. The Northern Rebellion, a war of independence for the North and the Riverlands. This war seemingly ended with Robb Stark's death, but was later continued by the Black Fish and Jon Snow until the latter virtually abdicated as King in the North and swore fealty to Queen Daenerys. Eventually, the North (but not the Riverlands) gained independence through diplomatic means (that is, Sansa asking Bran to let her be Queen in the North). 3. The Second Greyjoy Rebellion, a war of independence for the Iron Islands and Ironborn conquest of the North. This war practically ended when the Boltons killed all the Ironborn in the North. After Balon's death, both claimants of the salt throne gave up that claim as soon as they could, Euron to Cersei and Yara to Daenerys.
