The 1,676 mm (5 feet 6 in) wide gauge Bhanupli-Leh line, which is currently under construction, runs from Bhanupli in Punjab to Leh in Ladakh Union territory, India. The 465-kilometer (289 mi) long line will cut the distance between New Delhi and Leh travel time to 10 hours. The route will overtake China's Qinghai-Tibet railway to become the highest railway in the world when it is completed at an elevation of 5,360 meters above sea level. This project was one of the four crucial railway linkages across the Chinese border, according to the Indian Defence Ministry. The Indian government accelerated the project's land acquisition after the Galwan incident.

The line will cost 99,000 crores ($12.4 billion), with a total length of 476 km (296 mi) excluding the 13 km (8.1 mi) Leh-Sasherthang military rail link. This includes the $7.75 billion (62,0000 rupees) budgeted for tunnels and bridges. Phases of construction will be finished:

✔Phase-0 Bhanupli to Beri-Barmana (Bilaspur);
✔Phase-1 Beri-Barmana to Mandi: The line will link to the Indian railway network via the 63.1 km (39.2 mi) long under-construction railway line from the existing Bhanupli railway station in Punjab (on the existing Ambala-Sirhind-Una rail line) to Barmana in Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh.
✔Phase-2 Mandi to Manali;
✔Phase-3 Manali to Upshi;
✔Phase-4 Upshi to Leh;
✔Phase-5 Leh to Sasherthang (13 km (8.1 mi) extension link extension for the Indian Military.

The Bhanupli to Barmana (Bilaspur) track, now in phase 0 of development, is scheduled to be finished in 2025 as of February 2022. Phase 1 (Barmana to Leh)'s Barmana-Mandi section's land purchase has started.

    Yes it's a good news. It is very very urgent for our tours and defence purpose. Chin always busy to construct defence infrastructure very near to our boder areas to attack us at any time. Chin is also ready to reach it's military armaments through our very sensitive points of sikkim, chicken neck, doklam, Arunachal pradesh and uttarakhand etc. etc. Chin o Pakistan both are continuing cold War with our by border terrorism etc etc. Our Govt has to keep in touch with such daily sensitive matters.
