On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-28-21.

We're looking at a 1963 Pontiac Catalina in Black Paint. The car comes with the 421 CI V8 “Super Duty” “SD” engine and manual 4 speed transmission.

The car's Owner is Russ Toms. Russ has had this car since 2017. Russ shared his Friend had the car for a long time, and then he was able to purchase the car. The factory parts on this car are original “Super Duty” parts, and make this car a wonderful tribute to the original car.

ENJOY!

I’m a 1949 model myself, Northern California born and bred, so I lived those days. This Pontiac is a stunning rarity. It’s a shame Pontiac is no more.

Pontiac engine with three petals and hurst shifter that's definitely a Super Duty Plus setup. Pontiac is swagger😎 on four wheels the Redhead Rebel child of General Motors

Since I'm an SD kind of guy, I should recuse myself from commenting on how beautiful, awesome, gnarly-sounding, business-like, incredible, indestructible, powerful, and overall magnificent Russ' car is! I couldn't be unbiased so I won't attempt it. Thanks Lou!

Those eight lug wheels were some of the smartest looking wheels I've ever seen. Early sixty's model Pontiac's were elegant looking in their own right, but those wheels made them stand out from the crowd. This is the rarest Catalina I've ever gotten to see.

Pontiac had Beautiful front ends 64 to 67.Nice car brings back memorys.
  • Growing up in Detroit during this era there were numerous GM employees in our neighborhood. In particular was a Pontiac engineer that was into drag strip racing. I remember he had a blue Catalina Super Duty with aluminum front fenders, no sound insulation ,no power steering or brakes, heater and radio delete also. This car was very fast and he accumulated many street and strip victories. When he opened the dump tubes the ground would vibrate! I never saw another exactly like his again.

I couldn’t help but notice the rare “dual” master cylinder on this “Big Chief Pontiac!”

The 60's was Pontiac's greatest decade. They were the leader in many ways. Most of the decade they were 3rd in manufactures sales. My family's first Pontiac was a 62 Catalina which later became my first car. Pontiac has been my favorite manufacturer from that time on. I have had 15 over the years and currently have an original 74 Trans Am. This 63 SD 421 represents Pontiac at its best. You mentioned the Swiss cheese frame at that time to show what extent Pontiac would go to win by shaving the extra pounds off the car to be as light as Chevys, Fords and Plymouths. In addition to all the aluminum parts on this particular car, aluminum body panels could also be added for further weight reduction. Pontiac was still pulling a rabbit out of their hat with the SD 455 Firebirds in 1973 and 1974 when the muscle car world was all but dead. No one was more sad than me when Pontiac came to an end in 2010. Many young people know Pontiac only as an unexciting car that ended in 2010. Thanks to Russ and Lou for showing how great the Pontiac brand was.

  • Oh, I love it! This Pontiac definitely lets the world know it was built for speed. What an interesting tidbit about the hood scoop, too. Thanks, Lou!
  • @zincorbie
That’s a lot of factory aluminum! Pretty light car for its time.

One of my all time favorites, and I am a Ford man at heart

My auto shop teacher when I was a freshman in high school had a Pontiac Safari wagon with a 421 four barrel. For towing his boat he said. I and another student got to do a tune-up on it during class. So impressive I remember it 54 years later.
  • So rare! If it hadn’t been for the very low production numbers the 62-63 SD may have beaten the GTO to the title first true muscle car. Thanks Lou!
  • @MarkCordell
I learned how to drive with my grandfather’s ‘63 Catalina.
