Using drifts and charging mini turbos (drift boosts) is the most important technique in mario kart. How bad is no drifting? Everything else is allowed (including smart steering).

Wario, (Mercedes-Benz) GLA Car, GLA Tires, Wario Wing
Waluigi, Gold Kart, Slim Tires, Wario Wing

I've done this a bit before, but I do it in high handling combos, and you can even get some mini turbos if you turn really hard for a while

i remember when i played mario kart wii i didnt know how to drift and only learnt after i stopped playing the game, so as a kid i spent hours and hours trying to get gold in all grand prixs without drifting, took forever but i did end up pulling it off

If you can’t drift, smart steering seems objectively better than having it off because the main downside of smart steering is losing out on ultra mini turbos
