You should have made a bed, beds are excellent against the enderdragon, it would have been really easy to make also. You just make a bed structure, put in a live C4, add a mechanism to ignite the C4, put the bed next to the dragon, and BANG

I actually did something similar with "wooden" (brown) blocks. It was 3 blocks thick, but only really sturdy.
