Today let's dive into the world of Club Penguin- from the history of the game to all of the warm, fuzzy nostalgia, to the site's dramatic fall from grace and all of the drama that ensued. The site has a rather dark history, so let's take a look at the rise and fall of our beloved ol' Club Penguin.

God I remember taking the club penguin 'secret agent' thing VERY seriously hahaha. I was so dedicated to solving all of the missions and yes the jet pack and mine cart games were supreme. I miss this game so much. Good times.
  • Going this whole video without mentioning the secret agent missions feels like a shot to the heart

"Frosty how old are you" "Old enough to disown you" What an amazing interaction

I remember I was "dating" everybody on my friends list and they'd frequently walk in on me in my igloo with my penguin side hoes. I would watch them fight and then they'd leave me and I'd go straight back to the pizza parlour to put some new penguins in the rotation 😭
  • club penguin is so nostalgic for me, i know this sounds very "and everyone clapped", but someone talked about club penguin shutting down in class and half the class was legitimately distraught.

I used to adopt so many puffles you couldn't see the floor to my igloo and since afaik there was no way to just shuffle through each puffles (you had to individually click them, and they kept moving so I couldn't click them all) a lot of my puffles went neglected. I used to get legitimately upset I got the puffles running away notes and one time I was so distressed that I emailed club penguin support and asked if they were ok on my school email address. They replied saying something like yes they're fine but they always signed off the email with a question. I remember it was like "why do you think the sky is orange? (it was the lead up to some dojo event) and my stupid kid brain was like omg they wanna hear my opinions!! So I replied with my theory, and a different employee answered and signed off with another question (they were definitely required to do it) and I thought they wanted to be my friend and started just casually talking to them. Anyways shout out to the club penguin support employees who I traumadumped on about how I got bullied at school or something when I was 8. Came for club penguin, stayed for the support<3

i remember desperately trying to date people in the pizzeria and being so utterly distraught with the fact that 4 people broke up with me within 3 minutes that i sobbed and wrote a rap about it

My 7-year-old aspiring filmmaker self was absolutely the “really intense director barking orders”. I really didn’t understand why nobody followed my instructions, I was wearing the directors cap AND holding a megaphone!
  • I remember one of the last times I was on Club Penguin and went to the pizza parlor, I witnessed two penguins on a “date” when the guy’s “wife” barged in and we witnessed a penguin divorce. Perfection.

I remember my penguin used to "work" at the coffee shop. I was really disappointed when an update for some disney themed party turned the coffee shop into a smoothie shop and they never fixed it. Needless to say my penguin was out of a job.
  • “The underground swimming pool was the best hidden room” THAT IS SO TRUE! I’ve played on Club Penguin since 2009 and the most people I saw in there were three. And that was because the Halloween party turned the water into slime

When I was a kid I not only had a Club Penguin subscription, I had a subscription to the official magazine. The owner of my local corner shop made sure that a copy of the magazine would be at her shop every month for me to buy; she was a really sweet Indian lady but she unfortunately faced racial abuse from staff over the phone when she called about an issue that she hadn't received. I always felt really bad about that. I'll always be grateful for her though and I still have some items that came with the magazine (puffle badges and a key chain).

the fact the developers actually let the players tip the iceberg and reveal the secret in Club Penguin's last moments touches me.

It’s crazy how you hit the nail on the head with a lot of the old games you cover. It would be cool to see you cover Toontown Online and its extensive history sometime. It’s insane that Pirates Of The Caribbean Online, Pixie Hollow, and Toontown Online ALL CLOSED on the SAME DAY on 9/19/2013 ALL with the excuse that they wanted to focus on Club Penguin. It was absolutely nuts and extremely frustrating for a lot of people who played those games.

Haven't seen one comment shouting out the man himself: Rockhopper. Looking through the telescope and seeing his ship get closer each day, to when he would port and me and my friends would be on the phone going onto different servers to find him and get the special background. Those were amazing times.
  • Back in like 2007 a lot of brazilian players would go to some place in Club Penguin, changing the penguin's color to one of the brazilian flag's colors (blue, green and yellow), sit down there and try to form the Brazilian flag with the penguins. Then we'd start saying "WE WANT A BRAZILIAN SERVER" (because back then the game was divided in region servers like Australia, Canada etc.) Good times. So sad that moments like these will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...

Still scarred by my first experience of classism when my club penguin boyfriend left me for another penguin because she was member and was totally dripped out 😕

My absolute favorite Club Penguin memories were the secret missions. I'm neurodiv and as a kid this ultimately meant I was pretty antisocial, or at the very least, never saw the social appeal that these games had to offer (I was on Neopets during the Golden Era and managed to never set foot in the neoboards lol) so I spent most of my time getting the "single player" experience on Club Penguin. That mostly meant just playing the minigames over and over, but when missions became a thing I lost my *mind*. These little story-based single player Club Penguin experiences were just god-tier to young me. It felt like I was finally getting something major without having to socialize with other players. My favorite one was the one where you befriend a little black puffle while you survived the wilderness. Good times. Thank god flashpoint has all the missions archived.
  • When I was little I wrote a whole essay about the Club Penguin Ninjas and sent it to the customer service email. Someone responded and they were so excited and amazed at my dedicated and said they would show it to all their coworkers. The essay detailed all the "proof" and legends that had become popular on the internet (this was when the dojo was only a dojo - no official ninjas anywhere). I've tried to track down the essay, but the email I used to have is long deleted and who knows what computer I used to write it. It lives on in my memory. I hope I made someone's day by sending it along to the employees.
