When it comes to musical legacies, few are more talked about than The King Of Pop. Arguably as recognizable as Coke, Tesla or any other global brand, Michael Jackson was so widely known that most of the time that he stepped outside, he did so in disguise. And just like any other multinational business, Michael’s portfolio went way beyond his music catalog. For all that his public image has been widely dissected and debated over, one of the less scrutinized or studied aspects of Michael Jackson is the massive control that he had in the shadowy world of music publishing.

Over the course of his career, Michael bolstered his own record-breaking earnings by acquiring either entire catalogs or the select hits of other artists.

But where there were instances in which this could be chalked up to simple business, there are others in which the incentives behind purchasing the records seemed more personal.

And in the case of one of hip-hop’s biggest stars, it’s been argued that it was a petty chess move and the act of revenge.

MJ was out here collecting music publishing like Thanos

MJ seemed sweet and childlike, but when it came to understanding the business side of the music industry HE WAS GANGSTA. RIP King

Moves from artists against labels are almost like rooting for the underdog in a film. Frank Ocean's finesse of $20M to get out of his deal, Master P taking his rightfully owed $10M from Universal, and MJ's Sony/ATV publishing deal are the power moves that artists should study to have a leg up on the labels.

Mike was always for the culture. But everyone seemed to ignore that.

MJ would be the first music billionaire before Ye,JayZ,Dre etc if he was alive. A smart Business man & Legendary Artist 🐐
  • Michael Jackson was surrounded by alot of really smart business people.
  • Michael was eons beyond people of his time and his brilliance is evident in the way he conducted business and created his art. He's definitely one of the greatest of all time.

Everyone has been disrespectful towards MJ, even within the black communities. Almost as if he was too "white". He caught ridicule from everywhere, I remember clearly.
  • This video has convinced me that MJ was truly murdered, with him being alive labels would always have sleepless nights, this dude could buy anything when he wanted and a man with such power can really become a threat and thus becoming a target

This situation between MJ and Eminem continues to be one of the most overblown and misleading myths in popular music culture. I see this on Twitter a lot and it’s always framed as if Michael Jackson is a total bad ass and went out and bought Eminem’s entire catalog as revenge for dissing him in ‘Just Lose It’. But the TRUTH was, his company bought Famous Music as an overall business strategy that had nothing to do with Eminem at all. With this deal he acquired $370 million worth of publishing rights to many artist’s songs (which included a handful of Em songs — not his entire catalog as most people believe). Then sadly MJ was so broke and in debt when he died that his estate had to sell everything off. Since 2016 Em has acquired the rights to all his music, even the stuff he never owned back then like the rights held by Famous Music.

Music publishing is the most overlooked area for new artists looking to sign to a label. Its a shame bc if you really wanna work your music and you're a true artist and performer, it pays off in the long run to keep your pub.

lol, crazy how an interview with Benzino caused ppl to actually believe MJ bought Sony with 125k songs by various artists just to acquire 2 Eminem songs.
