The concept of a true "service station" may take on new life, with fuel, charging, a restaurant, package services and even dark kitchens. One thing is known: Gas stations will evolve with the growth of EVs and the changes in our trip patterns.

The timing of this is absolutely priceless....

I'm so glad this is finally being discussed; and Brian is the perfect guy to do it. Cooley is a rockstar!
  • Honestly I suspect gas stations (especially those along highways) will flip back something similar to truck stop diners, where the extra time to fill up will encourage people to grab a sit down meal or bite to eat. But even those are dependent on how fast the next generation of EV's charge from depleted to near full.
  • Actually there’s people who go to the gas station just for the convenience store. Maybe there a 7 ell-even or one that sells hot food.
  • Here’s what I wish my gas station had: gas. - living in the East Coast
  • Regarding battery swap, after 5 or 6 hours of driving, most people need to stop for 30 or 40 minutes for food and bio breaks.....plenty of time to “supercharge” their car. With swapping, you would wait with the car during the swap, then go park and do your food and bio break anyway. So the stop time is about the same.
  • I would estimate the number of people who go to convenience stores to get something other than gas at over 50%.
  • Brian, I wondered why places like Sam's Club and CostCo hasn't had charging stations where EV owners spend hours shopping. I old but am thinking of getting a small EV for local shopping. Long trips by gas car.
  • How do "WE" as a YouTube Society, cope with Cooley not being able to create/upload, "CNET on Cars" videos?????? Miss them days..
  • Amazing... I have always wondered why I can't order what I want from the convenience part of the "gas station" while I wait for someone to poorly park their car next to a pump, waddle in, stand in line to pay with cash, waddle out put gas in, waddle back in stand in line again to get change as there are 5 cars impatiently waiting. Then watch with horror as the poor driver tries to exit the station b/c the other drivers can only anticipate one step ahead. About 20 min of snacking time!
  • There will not be a need to replace every gas station with charging. In 4 years of driving electric, I have never needed charging in the city; that I do at home while I sleep. And I have spent nothing on repair or maintenance. Level 1 and 2 charging can be installed almost anywhere that there is electricity, no upgrade needed. I can charge at home, drive to visit family, charge at their house and drive home again.

I wish more, non-car people could watch this to better understand the situation
  • @dtkywtan
I think there's no tomorrow for ordinary gas stations serving non-commercial customers; depending on what you think how far away tomorrow will be.
  • Charging plugs aren't exactly universal Well yes to a degree but I can't put diesel in my car. Two different pumps for the internal combustion engine, two different plugs for the EV. (It's kind of the standard that's going on now, not perfect for minimizing cost and complexity but it work)
  • Excellent review of where the future needs to go. Will be hard with all that big oil money flowing through gas stations. I’m betting on more restaurants, Costcos, Sam’s Clubs, installing more charging stations.

ICEs aren't done yet. There's a type of fuel called synthetic gasoline (aka e-fuel) that could replace oil-derived gasoline.
