Lighting VFX Completely Changed my Game!

What's up, Gamers?
Following Mengo's advice, I created some really sick lighting vfx I can use for my indie game - and I think they turned out awesome! Hope you enjoy the lights and lighting effects I added, and maybe it'll be helpful for your own development as well!

The game that I'm developing as an indie game dev is called Isadora's Edge! A 2D Pixel Art platformer game, that I'm developing in the Godot Game Engine! If you're new to Godot or have any questions about Godot or game dev in general, feel free to ask me!

  • I must have watched a ton of online tutorials, I gobble up every indie studio dev blog, pour over most of the GDC content vault, listen to a dozen game industry and design podcasts but you and your series has inspired me more than anyone to actually commit myself to learning game dev. I am now farthest than I have ever been in finishing my first ever functioning prototype. Honestly man, thank you and keep up the good work!
  • Please don't take this poorly as it's just a genuine game design question and I don't want to be rude, but as retro platformers and metroidvania style games have become very popular lately in the indie space I'm interested to know what you plan on doing with yours to make it stand out from the rest, what's the it factor that you want to draw people into your game?

I recently started dedicating a lot of time to really learning godot and working on my own game project. There are a lot of great game devs out there making great videos (e.g. aartificial), but not all of them walk through their failures with as much detail as the successes. Really gives some nice “here’s what I’ve been up to lately” energy. Btw, I really appreciated the arms/legs separated animation short. (Been putting off the sprite rework ever since). Good luck!

Rarely do shorts give anything of value. Your channel, though, was a great exception to that rule. An indie dev's treasure room of videos and advice! As someone who is slowly building up to his long-time dream game, I find many questions I have to have already been answered by you. Thank you!
  • Dude, every video you post not only gets me hyped to play your game, but it makes me feel so motivated to make mine.
  • @Nekkka
Yooooo, I recently found you. Your game visual style is amazing! You motivate very well :3 Anyway... If anyone doesn’t want to read sad messages, then don’t read further, I just want to vent somewhere... I do game development myself, but in case I write music, 3D models, sprites and code. I encountered apathy. Burnout, which has not gone away for more than 2 years, and now I simply cannot do anything except eat, sleep and watch videos. Sometimes I don't even want to go to bed because I'm already tired. In general, the only good news is that it is not depression yet :'3 If anyone has an adwise or something, i`l keep it! I just so tired... Thanks for your videos! Now you really save me from self-digging...
  • I'm also working on my own sidescroller / metroidvania game, thats heavily plot based, but im watching your videos as they are very educational on satisfying gameplay.
  • Seeing the colored moving lights gave me a heavy nightclub vibe. Like John Wick goes there to meet someone undercover, but ends up John Wicking all over the place. If that makes any sense. It could also be cool for a dynamic stage play or casino scene, a la Persona 5. Don’t know if that’s what you were going for. I like the Giorno looking jacket btw.
  • @N1X2T3
Damn! your game is going to be a very promising game for a pixel lover like me, keep it up bud!
  • I personally thought you had more than 150k subs... Why do you only have 25k??? You deserve more... Like... what...
  • An idea that I think could be cool is maybe using light as a mechanic in the game? Having something like spotlights with intense lights would already look great with normal maps but what if there were searchlights which summoned enemies or modify movement but having those strong visuals tied to a game mechanic could be fun?
  • This is really cool, my game also relies on lightning I’m gonna give it a try to use some normal maps. Really inspiring video!
  • @drozzy_
Got drawn in by how cool your character looks, can't wait to follow the progress :D
  • Thank you so much for these videos my man. Love the shorts, but the long form stuff is why i subbed. You keep me motivated on the development of my game, too!
  • @DrTomb
glad to see you still going strong brother. Its so exciting
  • Keep up the work. Really excited to play this.
  • 3:18 I had the same issue with canvas modulate stopping the glow and I fixed it making a Canvas item material for the sprite and setting the lighting to unshaded, then the glow works fine !
