I served 26 years active duty working the C-5 as Aero Repair specialist. That aircraft allowed me see the world which is a blessing to experience.

i love these big birds. tip of the cap to the air force for doing such a great job maintaining them. design is over 60 years old and still going strong and looking good!

I was a C-141A jet engine mechanic at Yokota Air Base in Japan back in 1970. One of the first C-5s had an engine change there and we were not trained on the aircraft but kinda figured it out until the pylon winches broke down with the engine half way off. Had to rehang the engine and send the winches back to Travis to get them fixed. I didn’t finish working on it as I think they might have brought a TDY crew from Travis to finish the job. It was one big ass airplane.
  • Station at Udorn airfield 1974 I signed out for R&R expecting to take hop down to Bangkok. That same day this C5 came in never saw it in person. The whole base froze watching this land. I was able to leave on it back to the U.S. Will never forget that moment!

I loved flying on the C5. Engineering marvel.

My dad worked on Pershing missiles and the C5 is what they used moving the missiles around the world for training. He said it was an amazing plane to ride on.

I flew on the C141 and the thing I remember most about the C5 was they were broken down globally. But those guys got plenty of time off in cool places lol. When they did move they moved a lot and you certainly can't take that away from them ! Biggest mistake ever made was designating the 141 a tactical aircraft, it cracked them to piece's (crack's in the t tail you could put your hand in).

The whole aircraft is not jacked up to change the tires. Each individual landing gear truck can be jacked.

    Sooo...what's the genious solution?
  • @johncope826
I really enjoyed my time working on the C5 John C.
  • The f-22 was built there while they built that monster plant in ft worth Texas but the c-130 and C-5 are repaired and modernized at the Atlanta plant ( yes technically it’s Marietta Georgia ) lol

which part of the video is the "Genius Solution". appears that the techniques to do maintenance on the C-5 are the same used by all the other aircraft in the USAF inventory.
  • I stay next to an Air Force Base and they stay working on those planes. I can hear turbines all night!
  • For a video that is C-5 centric, can't help but notice that the cargo jet at 2:54 is a C-17.
  • Wow at telehandler? That is insane, truly genius. Cool plane though.
