What exactly is the connection between a tick bite and lyme disease? While we’re not sure exactly where and when the disease originated, we do know a lot about how it works, its signs, its symptoms in humans and dogs, how it’s spread and its treatment.

SICK is a new series that looks at how diseases actually work inside our body. We'll be visiting medical centers and talking to top researchers and doctors to uncover the mysteries of viruses, bacteria, fungi and our own immune system. Come back every Tuesday for a new episode and let us know in the comments which diseases you think we should cover next.

History of Lyme Disease
www.bayarealyme.org/about-lyme/history-lyme-diseas…
"Ticks and Lyme disease have been around for thousands of years. In fact, a recent autopsy on a 5,300-year-old mummy indicated the presence of the bacteria which causes Lyme disease. A German physician, Alfred Buchwald, first described the chronic skin rash, or erythema migrans, of what is now known to be Lyme disease more than 130 years ago. However, Lyme disease was only recognized in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. And the bacteria that causes it – Borrelia burgdorferi – wasn’t officially classified until 1981."

So basically if a tick bites you, panic. Right down to your cells.

It’s named for the place it was identified, Lyme Connecticut. I live 5 miles away.
  • Thank you for making this video. My cousin has lymes disease and has been receiving bad treatment here in the uk cause most doctors either don’t know enough about it or don’t believe that it exists. So thanks again for increasing people’s awareness to lymes disease !!

Thanks for pointing out that you may or may NOT get the bullseye rash. A lot of doctors dont seem to get that unfortunately.

I've been living with Lyme's disease for a little over a year now... Got bit by a tick in the park with my dog, had a huge bullseye, no idea what it was until a colleague urged me to see a doctor. I wasn't worried as I heard most of the time nothing happens and antibiotics do the job. 3 weeks of antibiotics didn't do the job. I'm officially chronic now and it's slowly getting worst. I get sick with awful flu like symptoms every single time I travel or am a bit stressed or cold or anything, get migraines, lose focus, sometimes wakeup with extreme weakness. It has made me very depressed, I used to be so healthy and now feel like ive aged 20 years... And there is nothing I can do about it. :(

Lyme Disease can be very debilitating. Here in British Columbia the medical community wouldn't acknowledge its existence, so people that contracted it would not be treated and suffered terribly. Only one doctor would treat affected people, and his medical license was revoked for doing so. If you become infected, get treatment right away and make sure they give high doses of antibiotics. Failure to do so can cause the disease to become chronic.

I'm doing my biology project on Lyme and your visuals/explanations of the immune system attack really helped me understand!!
  • @AfterDark33
Both me and my sister had Lyme disease and coincidentally we both had stomach and nervous problems. It’s a real pain.

This couldn’t have been better timing, my cousin was just diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Thanks guys.

Just got bit by a tick on Sunday. Felt something on my inner thigh and picked it off without thinking looked at it yesterday and found it has a black almost bruised center with a orangish-red ring around it. I'll be going to urgent care in the morning.
  • I have Lyme arthritis and had Lyme. If you got a tick bite and have flu like symptoms see your Dr. ESPECIALLY if your area sees high deer tick activity like mine. My county has the second highest incidence of Lyme in the USA.
  • @amaurys93
The music seems bizarre for the topic. No music at all would've done the presentation more justice
  • @YouShotMyRobot
Hugs to all my fellow Lymies out there. Hoping that whoever decides the standards for treatments recognizes alternative treatments to antibiotics. So rarely do antibiotics work or completely get rid of it. Antibiotics nearly destroyed me (way last just herxing).
  • @Thankyouchef
Love how the drums go along with the talking so pleasing as a drummer

I was on the trial for the first vaccine I still deal with it. Never again. I think Lyme never goes away no matter what they say
