I went to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in the Netherlands recently and your Macmillan Greek myths books were for sale at the museumshop! I was delighted to see you share a table with Mary Beard and Adrian Goldsworthy.
  • There is so much romance in other genres that I always use the other genre as it's primary and then maybe have a romance section within the primary genre depending on how many I have.

Congrats on your new home! May it bring you both immeasurable joy! Can't wait for the office tour!

I am one of those people who derives a ridiculous amount of satisfaction seeing the colophons from various imprints lined up next to each other on the shelf - so I have a "shelve by imprint" and then "otherwise shelve by genre" (unless Austen, Shakespeare, Winnie-the-Pooh, or a signed edition - LOL, I am ridiculous) system

I have followed you since you began YouTube and I am crying I’m so glad I found your channel again after my hiatus 😭 I adore you and didn’t even know you wrote a book I’m purchasing it immediately !!
  • My advice on organising when it comes to things like retelling/crossing genre stuff would be that findability is more important than accuracy. I'm a librarian and this has held true in the workplace (health and academic libraries) and at home. So for example at home I have a section for poetry that lives in one room, but my copy of the poetry collection Soho lives upstairs with my queer culture and history section, because if I want to read it I know where it is more easily than hauling through all the poetry shelves - which are already overcrowded.

my head hurts from trying to figure out the perfect way to organize all those books 😅
  • @LinnaAP
Just do what makes sense to you! ❤ for me, I'm always most happy with my shelves when their organization makes sense to me, even if other people don't get it, or isn't exactly perfect ❤

Hi Jean, Well ... where you are now I will be in a months time as my husband and I are moving from a house to a condo. My library will no longer be in the basement but instead will take over the space that is meant to be the master bedroom. Above ground!!!! Plus the back wall of the dining room area, plus another wall in the living area, plus ... eh ... well ... you get the picture. Currently my library is taking up close to 60 boxes and that's just books! When it comes to unpacking, well I've always divided my books by my two main favourite genres which is fantasy and historical fiction but in our new place I may have to rethink that system. My plan for now is to just get the bookcases (old and new) in place and then empty those boxes!!! Oh how I am looking forward to emptying those boxes!! I miss my library so much!!!! Once that's done I can take my time and move things around as I see fit. I figure that that will be a nice project for the winter months. I look forward to seeing you stock your bookshelves and maybe even decorating your space as well. Note: I'm sure that our movers will love all those boxes marked BOOKS! Or, as we packed more and more boxes and began to get a little ... um ... punch drunk ... MORE BOOKS!!! LOOK< BOOKS!!! YES, IT's BOOKS!!! and of course inevitably ... BETCHA CAN'T GUESS WHAT'S IN HERE!!!! Sigh!!! Thanks for the inspiration Jean. And good luck!!!!
  • @emmas7045
I saw your books for sale today in London. Made me smile. Congrats on your new place!
  • I read some of the chapters in ‘Revisiting Rape in Antiquity’ a couple of weeks ago in preparation for my dissertation project before recognising your name! It’s so good (v. difficult to get access to but brilliant)- a year late but congratulations on it 😊
  • @Lauraareads
Congratulations on your new home! So excited to see how you organise them all💞
  • I have to say I just discovered your channel and I absolutely love and am also surprised to see that you are into history! I’m am huge into history of all kinds especially medieval, colonial and victorian but really love all history! So it made me excited to watch your video! Not very many people into history these days sadly!
  • @AlwaysBecca
I split my books up by genre but when books could fit in various sections I tend to just go by vibe, whatever place "feels right"for that particular book. I enjoy seeing all my oxford world classics together and all my penguins together even if it separate a book from its genre section and if you have a ton by one author i would just consider having a seperate devon just for them.
  • @lucygaweda3396
I used to organise by genre and really struggled with catergorising books that are mixed genres because like you at 11:09, WHERE ON EARTH DO YOU PUT ROMANTASY?? So I decided controversially to do a rainbow shelf instead.
  • @tabaluke2584
For me Romantasy definitely goes with Fantasy 😊
  • Congrats on the move! I can't wait to see your library once you have shelves <3 On a Sunbeam is one of my favourite graphic novels too!
