I'VE ALWAYS BEEN BAFFLED WHY THE FIRST SHOT OF SUPERMAN RETURNS WAS OF LEX LUTHOR. IT REALLY TOOK ME OUT OF THE FILM. WHEN THE TEXT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE TOLD US SUPERMAN DISAPPEARED, I FOR ONE WANTED TO KNOW.... WHERE?!!

BRYAN SINGER FILMED A WONDERFUL RETURN TO KRYPTON SCENE TO EXPLAIN THIS. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN BAFFLED AS TO WHY IT WAS DELETED, CONSIDERING THERE WERE MANY OTHER TOTALLY USELESS SCENES IN SR.

THIS IS HOW I THINK SUPERMAN RETURNS SHOULD HAVE OPENED. THAT IS TO SAY, THIS IS HOW I IMAGINED SINGER ORIGINALLY INTENDED IT TO OPEN. COMMENTS, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE, WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS!!

  • Beautifully done Sir. The design of the ship and the remains of Krypton doing a tribute to the first movie made me shed tears. Greetings from Brasil

There Should Be A Directors Cut With This Opening With Superman Visiting The Remains Of Krypton 😮!

i KNOW I saw a video where the house of El emblem actually crumbled revealing kryptonite, but no one seems to have that version.

Nice job. While I will always find the film flawed this would have been a much better start than the one used. At least if foreshadowed the final confrontation and gave a more concrete feeling he had to see the remains of Krypton for himself.
  • By the looks of this Kryptonian technology means that Kal-el's small scout craft goes faster-than-light and is able to go through wormholes. Amazing.

Oh I completely agree. ANd in HD or *k the scene has so much detail and it really give syou a sense of the devastation. Ultimately I think maybe the reason they cut it is that that honestly, for people like us, is its own movie. Like go there, bring a lead suit, explore the place, just don't go for a looksee.... But what we got when that footage was revealed, absolutely blew me away. So enamored of it. Thanks for building it into the titles :) One day I hope there is a directors cut that includes it like this.

Well , the story behind it is that Singer was supposed to make the sequel to SR and wanted to re-release SR in IMAX (maybe 3D) just before the theatrical release of this sequel. And THIS Krypton intro was supposed to be re-edited in (along with a few other scenes, including the ones explaning that the news about Krypton was a trap from Lex Lutor, all along, to send him away during his trial...), making the new release more of an event, kind of like the Star Wars Special Editions... But SR, although not being a bomb, underperformed, and Singer never made his "Wrath Of Khan of Superman movies", with the battle of "New Krypton" at the center of it.

Without a doubt, this opening scene would have given a different perspective and a unique depth to the film. If the movie was about the return of Superman, the right thing to do was to close the Kryptonian story arc. To have a true continuity of Superman. In other words, you talk about Superman but you hide the outcome of his origins? It was a wrong decision of the directors at that time to remove this work of art.
  • A wonderful scene !!! Too bad we didn't include her in the movie .. Brandon Routh beautiful 🥰😍❤

Lovely. A bit of horror in a way. And the lack of music helps build the tension. I yearn to see a Super Cut of Superman Returns because this the film, while good, could be better.
  • In the theatrical cut didnt we see Krypton explode again? It seemed like they changed it where the red sun was an actual supernova.

@ 2:00 his ship passes through ruins of Science Council building dome.

THANKYOU for watching Firstname.... it means a lot to know what you think, good or bad. I've actually finished the full recut of the entire movie. I too am totally baffled as to why this got cut & Lex deducing an old lady got kept as the first opening scene. As for MOS, I think the sequel will greatly improve the minor faults that movie had. I would watch if I were you, you may be pleasantly surprised.

But this makes no sense of why even Kal El would go back to a planet that is not even there…which was explained by Jor El his Father in great detail ..why did Even Bryan Singer even film this?
  • @robertcalva3773
They should have included this scene in the theatrical release of the film.

I did a version of this years ago while doing my own recut of the movie. I actually got rid of the text but kept Krypton exploding and then faded into the RTK scene and after that went to the opening titles through the window of the ship the way you did. I'd actually intended to redo the opening titles with some newspaper shots (I think it was done in the game or maybe a BTS documentary or something) telling the story of the 5 years Superman was away but it ended up being too much work. I believe the first scene after the opening titles was Lex on the ship, heading to the Fortress (yeah I completely cut the old woman scene). I added in some of the Kent farm stuff and I made a few tweaks throughout. For example, I moved the bank robbery scene to right after the interview (if memory serves I cut the "Superman spies on Lois and Richard" scene) which I think helped the pacing better and made it feel like there were more action scenes than there were. Basically, the bullet hits the eye and then cuts to the burrito scene, the joke being that Superman managed to stop a bank robbery and get back into his seat by the time Lois got down from the roof. I wish I still had that cut but I did it way back when the RTK scene came out and that hard drive is long gone, along with my aborted attempt to recut Superman The Movie and Superman II into a single film.

Nice edit. Too bad you didn't direct the movie.
