Here is the film "Conrak" from 1974. The story of an idealistic, innovative teacher on a remote South Carolina island. His unorthodox teaching methods bring him into conflict with the reactionary school superintendent. Starring Jon Voight.

  • So glad I found this, I saw this movie years ago and have been looking for it to watch again. One of my favorite movies.
  • Great movie. I just caught most of it on TV. Came here to see what I missed. Thank you for sharing.
  • This and The Water is Wide from 2006 (which tells the same story) are both a gem: well-casted, acted, directed, and sure brings a tear to your eye.

A very good movie. I hadn't seen it since early Childhood around nine or ten, on television while growing up in Mississippi. Certainly inspiring in some ways. It seemed... familiar. 😊
  • One of my favorite movies. The book is great as well. Last year, I shared it with my mother, a teacher of that generation. And she shared it with her neice, a teacher of inner city North Carolina and my Aunt, a music teacher of the same generation. They all loved the book and hated it at the same time. Reality is a roller coaster. None of them had heard of it before, strangely enough.

Had never even heard of this movie before my Cousin mentioned it today. Fantastic movie! Thank you for posting it.
  • So happy to subscribe; I respect you for reading my mind; this movie means a lot to me❤😊
  • Sadly, opportunists are trying to invade their land today, on the islands of South Carolina, where Gulla was widely spoken. Fondly remember us pulling in crab pots when we stayed at the Delaware beaches long ago.
  • I love the fact that Jon Voight put the role above his political beliefs. I never understood John Wayne turning down roles because of his political beliefs or image. He missed some of the best written roles in drama and comedy. You're a god damn actor, is there anything better in the world? I loved the soundtrack on this film. It wouldn't be the same film without it.

28:44 There should have been a follow up line to this. Something like this would have been perfect to end this scene: "that's why I want you all to read and learn as much as you can on your own so you'll know if what someone is telling you is the truth". That could have instilled a desire for them to grow a desire to learn and build their critical thinking skills.
  • I deal with learning disorder myself..n i was diagnose late in 2006. While I was in college I got AA degree in fashion, liberal arts degree. I also a sociology degree.
