What is Lipoma? (Fat Lump Under Skin) - healthery.com/health/lipoma/

Presented by healthery.com

A Lipoma is a benign tumor made up of adipocytes, or fat cells. Surrounded by connective tissue in a capsule or throughout subcutaneous tissue. Lipomas can develop in deeper tissues, like the abdominal organs. Lipomas are slow-growing and often asymptomatic, and do not require treatment. Although a Lipoma is composed of fat cells, it is not caused by excess weight. The cause of this condition is not known. However, they do tend to run in families and can be congenital. Dercum’s disease & Madlung’s disease can cause Lipomas as a symptom.

What are the Symptoms of Lipoma? They are usually just 1 or 2 centimeters in size but can exceed 20 centimeters. They can be felt and seen as bumps under the dermis. They are round, rubbery, and movable consistency and typically don’t cause pain. Sometimes there is pain when a Lipoma compresses a nerve.

What are the Causes of Lipoma? It's composed of fat cells, between the skin and underlying layer of muscle. They grow slow and are commonly found on the shoulders, back or neck. However, they can form on many different areas of the body. They are thought to be hereditary, but genetic studies showed different results: such as Familial Multiple Lipomatosis, Gardner Syndrome, and Adiposis Dolorosa. As well as Cowden Syndrome & Madelung Disease can promote Lipoma growths. A correlation has been shown between the obesity gene (HMG I-C) and Lipoma. Another possible cause is physical trauma, whether it be minor or major. It's not clear if the trauma is the cause or is what finds the Lipoma.

How is Lipoma Treated? They usually don't need treatment since they stop growing and are asymptomatic. Since they can be seen, many want them removed solely for cosmetic reasons. A person may want it removed if it's compressing a structure or is infected. Lipoma removal is an outpatient surgery. The process is by injection of a local anesthetic. Next, an incision is made, tumor removed, and stitched. If it's in deeper layers, general anesthesia in an operating room is an option.

How is Lipoma Prevented? There are no proven methods of preventing the growth or appearance of Lipomas. There is nothing that can be done to stop Lipomas from growing. Diets or exercise routines will not aid in preventing new or old Lipomas. This is since Lipomas are part of a hereditary predisposition. It is very important to have a doctor check to verify each growth. Typically, doctors don't recommend removal when they are benign. Unless they are large or interfere with daily life. Sometimes, steroid shots and liposuction are used to shrink Lipomas.

I just had my lipoma surgery yesterday. My lump was at the left side of my back near the waist area. The doctor said it will continue to grow and it somehow causes me pain if I touch it accidentally. I decided to remove it with LA and still in recovery phase. I just want to encourage those who are going for surgery sooner or later. Don’t worry too much. You’ll be fine.
  • When I felt a lump in my lower right back,I thought I had cancer my 1st Surgeon/Oncologist wanted to get a specimen for exploratory laparoscopy procedure to subject it for lab testing, thankfully it was negative for cancer cells,Since I was still bothered by the bulging lump I went to see another Surgeon who subjected me to an extraction procedure which was a success a big lump of fatty tissue was extracted from my lower right back and subjected to biopsy which turned out negative,I am happy and thank God that finally the lump is gone and knowing .that I am cancer free Good luck to everyone.

I'm 63, male. I had a mass of 1" x 0.5" grow between my thumb and finger on my right hand, 1 year, ago. If is soft, rubbery and flexible but causes absolutely NO PAIN or discomfort of any kind. My wife was freaking out when she saw it because the growth occurred very quickly (full size in less than month). We both thought "tumor" of some sort. But, because I'm in excellent health and fitness ( I can still run two miles in under 15 minutes), I figured I'd give it time to resolve itself and, hopefully, subside... Well, its been a year, and though it hasn't grown any bigger, it hasn't gone away. But, since there's no pain, I'm in no rush to see a doctor, yet. I'm so glad that I've finally solved the "mystery" (lipoma) and I know, now, its just a benign fatty tumor that represents no immediate health hazard. It's gross looking, no doubt, but I'm in no rush to get it removed. I'm not worried, anymore, by its presence and grateful that my health is not jeopardized by this odd disfigurement. What a relief!

I once had a lipoma, then I drank turmeric water every day, then it deflated and healed in a few months, but strangely it came back after a few years, maybe because lately eat to much junk food and lazy to exercise, i will live healthy and diet healthy again i hope to be able to flat again.

Lipoma is really depressing 😞. Have one at the right side of my face, making it so uneven..most times, taking pictures with only the left side of my face and avoid cameras showing the right side of my face. This is depressing for real.I just pray my children don’t have it and if it means not getting married and adopting children,I will...I don’t wish this on my worst enemy,it’s so psychologically and emotionally painful 😣

So I have one of those on left side of neck. I think I have been researching too much and I literally think I have given myself health anxiety. I have somehow convinced myself I have lymphoma and I’m going to die 😭
  • The animations were pointless.. not related to anything written in text. Most probably the video is generated by some software. Well, the information was also repeated several times just to increase watch time. Damn
  • the first time I had lipomas removed were when they were on my thighs and hips. before the surgery, one doctor said they were totally common and I shouldn't need/have them removed. I asked him how many he had around his thighs and he stfu real quick. 11 incisions and 29 lumps later they were gone(ish). It was like a clump of them on each leg. Some new ones formed but not as bad. Currently, they are on my arms and back. my body is riddled with them. Sometimes I think its karma but that's absurd. I do not wish lipomas on anyone. if your case is like mine and have well over 100, you have my sympathy. I fucking hate them. If you have one and want it removed, just tell your doctor it hurts and it'll be quick and painless.

I like the way you are presenting the video. Describing the problem in the best way, where video seems funny/interesting with lot of information and at same time, doesn’t create panic while watching.
  • @chrisl418
Thanks, learned a lot! I'll get them checked and confirmed as benign.
  • @HaNguyen-yy7ke

  • @sadboy6685
Very informative video but pls sir tell about sarcomas? Tell difference between the lipomas and sarcomas
  • @jpawhees
My theory on why lipomas form is because of an inner tissue tear. I had a sudden pain where the lipoma formed a few months later. I guess that area of the tissue stretched and tore. Then the fat cells pool into that area. Then the body notices it as foreign and creates a membrane around it stopping the growth.
  • @Lima547
