Main cause is they were occupied by russian bolshevik state in 1920 who gave 90 present Armenian populated Karabagh to Azerbaijan to create conflict between them, so they can always can control them. That is a very standard policy of occupying empires, until one day they collapse and the conflict becomes uncontrollable.
