...the Rest of the Ravens' Story | AFC Championship Game Tape Breakdown by Kurt Warner

Published 2024-01-31
In this episode of StubyBall we're going to break down the game tape on the Baltimore Ravens season-ender against the Chiefs. In this one, we'll be focusing on first and second down plays. A lot of things for this offense to continue to clean up. #baltimoreravens #nfl #lamarjackson

Watching these type of analysis made me realize how complex NFL defenses are. I used to think they were just a bunch of bullies 🤣
  • If I were Ravens fan I would be happy with this breakdown cos it shows a lot of pass game sophistication and they got receivers open a lot.

Great vids. Not many people are showing how Spags put pressure on Lamar to step up and be a hall of famer. Lamar just wanted to score 14 points with every play.

Why isn't Kurt coaching? This is incredibly simple and makes absolute sense. Wow.

poor coaching offeensely or lamar not comprehending; either way it's gotta be fixed💜🖤💜🖤

So, listening further...what I hear from Kurt is him describing what we believed was refined is basically what one who knows the game an offense in their first year together needing to continue to learn and refine more to be more buttoned up. And that would make sense even to the average or casual fan. They do have a grasp of Monken concepts in his offense but more need to collectively define that offense with recognizing the details better you can't with one season together of this particular grouping.

Boy, the areas Lamar struggles in the passing game really stand out when you put on the film. He's a special athlete and a good leader, and if he ever figures out passing progressions consistently he'll be unstoppable. But he hasn't yet.

The Ravens had one of the best running games in the league this season. Their first run by Gus Edwards with Lamar under centre goes for 15 yards and then for the rest of the game all I see is Lamar dropping back in shotgun and being expected to win as a pure drop back passer against that Chiefs secondary. That gameplan was always a recipe for total disaster especially with Spag's creative blitzing and pressures. Honestly I think Raven's fans and neutral fans were robbed of a really close game due to the Raven's playcalling, particularly as the Raven's defence stepped up in the second half so the game was never really out of reach for them. It honestly reminded me a lot of the Titans playoff game in 2019 when Lamar won his last MVP. A game which the Ravens also lost. The Ravens went down multiple scores early in that one when Roman was calling the plays and exactly the same thing happened. Lamar struggled as a pure drop back passer against a strong defence got frustrated and lost. In some ways this game felt worse than that one as the Ravens were never down more than 10 points in this so abandoning the run felt almost inexcusable. So despite the improvements for Lamar in the regular season does it really matter when your playcalling is so poor and unbalanced in the Championship game? In terms of the Super Bowl aspirations it's no different to having Roman still there. I think as an MVP people rightly expect Lamar to be an elite playmaker but when you get to the AFC Championship against a coordinator like Spags you have to be balanced in terms of run/pass, formation, personnel, motion, P.A. etc. or you will get outplayed and outcoached pure & simple. The playmaking still needs to be there in that context but you can't force Lamar to do that every other play! Look at Mahomes on the other side. He had an excellent performance for sure, but the offence was balanced and they continued to run the ball with Pacheco I mean they even had a scoring drive that lasted nearly 10 minutes! That was the kind of drive I expected from the Ravens! Mahomes only made elite plays when it was absolutely necessary while also being an efficient short passer and dare I say even a game manager at times. So yes I think Kurt's criticisms of Lamar are valid and correct but in the context of this game and the playcalling against an elite defence, are the mistakes really that suprising?

If he took that to the house that would have been the greatest play in sports history. A QB throwing a 70yd td to himself.

@13:35 - great analysis - Lamar all arm on the overthrow. It's a simple thing but overlooked - the mechanics lead to accuracy. As for the overall scheme - there is a lot of Air Raid mixed w/ wco timing and that is so tricky. The thing about the air raid in it's pure form is simplicity. A few concepts practiced over and over so that the QB/Receivers are in sync - which is HUGE - because air raid is like it sounds - air - looking for the open space - Pro Schemes are so much more about Timing - perfection if you will. Gillman's original concepts - at their best - were perfection -- same with Walsh - Martz. Obviously, you can comment on this, Kurt. But air raid is more of a passing blitz! Find the space and hit it and get to the next until it's a TD then start again. A Philosophy. Now add in a running QB -- wow - it's a lot and vs a tricky defense like Spags and the Chiefs present , it's tough.. There were a ton of disconnections on this film. The defense was messing with the offense and the offense responded poorly because it's not a gameplan with enough simplicity to handle all of this. This whole idea of bringing in Power Spread and Air Raid elements into the NFL is a big work in progress -- could end up being amazing (see the dolphins or texans) but also can backfire big time atm.

Ravens need to pay you to be a Qb consultant.

Hey Kurt love the channel, the whole time you been talking Lamar and the passing game been clunky all year. I have a question that I would like you to address. As you know as a HOF QB…that the offense and defense is based off of the HEAD COACH philosophy. So if your head coach philosophy is a run the ball pound the rock type of offense. You will draft players and pick coaches for that offense. So if we are running team why we got small fast receivers and receiving tight ends that have to block. Andrews and likely are not the usual blocking tight ends. If we like to run the ball where is our 3 down cowbell…like cmc or jacobs. We threw the ball 46 times knowing our oline are known and built to run the ball. Our oline coach is an expert on run blocking schemes. He does not have the prowess to properly teach the oline modern pass pro blocking schemes. Non of our oline are known pass blocking. So are we blaming Lamar for poor organizational and team structure. The ravens don’t have an offensive identity. That’s the problem. Mahomes, Allen, Herbert, hurts, dark, burrow all have oline that know for pass blocking except Lamar but we want Lamar to be excellent behind horrible pass pro blocking offensive line. Can Kurt Warner explain the people that because it is all connected. That’s why the fans are talking about firing John harbaugh of his poor team structure and identity of the offense for years now have killing this team
  • Simply put the Ravens coaches panicked after Chiefs put 14 up early. Why else abandoned what got you there. RUN BABY RUN!!! Absolutely worst play calling I’ve ever witnessed. The Defense deserved better
  • now if you own a farm and are baiting with corn, in that case I agree with you. Many backyard hunters only have a few acres to hunt and attract deer

The issue with this game is this was game where he could have been ok and they could have won it - I watched every game all year every snap - no one can convince me that you trade 15 runs with passes that we don’t win this game - So we can’t win this game with 25 passes and 125- 140 rush yards ? Am I tripping ?
