Pretty sure a 100 ton cargo ship will do some kind of damage if not destroy any bridge...
-
The section that got hit obviously was going down, but the other sections just crumbling away too is very unfortunate due to the design.
-
They should put 2 emergency tugboats 24/7 sit next to bridge piers vulnerable to collisions. A busy container port like Baltimore sits next to a vulnerable bridge is like having fire in the woods. Bridge pier collision will happen sooner or later.

The creator of the Golden Gate Bridge was way ahead of his time

historical plot twist baltimore made the steel used in most bay area bridges at sparrows point

The shipping lane for both the bay bridge and Golden Gate bridge are both suspension bridges where the load is carry by the suspension cables. So this sort of catastrophic collapse would be unlikely. The skyway portion is concrete sitting on large concrete piers. Even any shift the deck would most likely remain anchored unless the entire pier is wiped out. The worse thing is one section of deck fall into the water. Unlike the Baltimore bridge which is anchored to the pier at two points at the pier. Once the anchor is broken, the entire truss can shift and fall apart. Bay bridge is designated as a lifeline structures. That means they need to serviceable after a major quake. But the reality is nobody knows how these bridges would fare until the real event. But these bridges are supposed to designed with extra safety for movement and redundancy.

The golden gate bridge could withstand anything except Godzilla attack. đđ Bad jokes aside, my heart goes out to Baltimore and the victims. Let's hope we can recover and rebuild the bridge asap.

All I hear is âwe are the Bay Area, we are special, nothing bad can happen hereâ
-
Could our bridges buckle? Well if a huge fucking boat crashes into them. What a dumb question.
-
Very good to know.
-
Just in case you're kind of slow. There's probably not very many bridges anywhere in the world That can stand up to a fully loaded container ship
-
I would be more concerned about idiots doing street take overs or protests on the bridges.

Is the bay even dredged south of the Dumbarton bridge? I have never once seen a ship go down there. Where would it even stop?
-
What about the The Helen Madere Memorial / Rio Vista Bridge where I live!!
-
REASONABLE
-
Man, that baltimore bridge is made of aluminum and looks frail. that ship we'll split in half if it hits golden gate or the bay bride
-
The fact that the Key Bridge came do so quickly and easily, like it was made of tin foil or something is very concerning god forbid something similar happens to the Golden Gate Bridge. Though, I don't think any bridge cane survive getting hit by 100 ton cargo ship....
-
our bridges and infrastructures are too old too!
-
Ya are port cities gonna see this common now with cargo ships like train derailments, that was some accident & is Golden Gate that fragile
