Choosing good color combinations doesn’t come naturally to most of us. Just because you’ve learnt basic color theory in school doesn’t mean you automatically know what colors work well together and why certain colors seem to clash.

In this video, I’ll show you how you can use COLOR PALETTES to choose perfect color combinations that look good for every project.

I’ve included more details and links in my blog post here: sarahrenaeclark.com/How-to-use-a-color-palette

Color palettes can:
- help you to create a certain look or mood with your art, whether it’s something fun and vibrant, or dark and emotional;
- be a great source of inspiration for your coloring pages;
- Help you break through creative block and give you a starting point when you’re stuck for ideas or not sure where to begin with your drawing;
- become a really fun part of your creative process;
- help you think of new and unique ways to look at something, like using different colors that you wouldn’t usually consider using on a coloring page;
- give you more variety, like unique colors for a sunset painting;
- give you confidence in choosing your colors. And over time, you’ll naturally develop an eye for what colors look good together, and build your own skills in choosing colors.

Here’s a summary of what’s included in the video so you can come back later and jump to a specific part to watch again:

    When I worked as a web designer, I wouldn’t have started a project without first choosing a colour palette. When I moved house a couple of years ago, I chose a colour palette for every room each including a metallic accent colour. Funny then that I hadn’t considered doing so for my colouring book until recently. I’ve now been using the bottom of the colouring page to swatch the colours and note which pencil it is. I also quite like mixing the colours together and then using a white or pink to burnish them. Thanks for another great video! 😉

    Each set has some unique colours that you won’t find in any other pencil set. The scorpion set has a burgundy and a charcoal green that are astounding. I tell my students to get the original Black Widow set and the Monarch to start. That gets them the basics and the beautiful pastels.

    I'm repurposing old linens into fabric hearts, adding vintage rick rack/lace/bias tape, etc. and wanting to add the best of these to match the linen/fabric colors while also adding buttons or vintage pins as well.
  • Sarah your videos have really opened my eyes in the colored pencil world. I’ve been coloring for a very long time but always have gotten stuck on choosing colors other than the same ones over and over. I’m so happy I stumbled on to you and your super fun and informative videos. I know this vid will go a long way toward helping me get “unstuck”

    I love using color palettes. When I start a new crochet project choosing a palette is my first step. It has helped me make some really pretty, vibrant blankets.
  • I'm planning on a monochromatic artwork to start on Wednesday. And this tutorial will be helpful for choosing the right colors for the scheme I'm choosing.
