In this SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED, we break down an Out of Bounds speedrun of Portal (the original, not Portal 2). This run is done by the world record holder, Can’t Even. This run includes glitches and skips, including wild movement with the Source engine, skipping the Relaxation Vault, going out-of-bounds, and some cheeky shenanigans with the cake room and companion cube… This video serves as an explanation of the strategies used by Can’t Even to beat Portal in just 5 minutes.

  • you know it's gonna be good when the video is 7 times longer than the actual speedrun
  • It's nice to know that the speed running community for Portal is... Still Alive.

hey everyone! first, i just want to say thanks to tomatoanus for getting us involved in this video - it was super fun to work with him on and he was very accomodating of all our little nitpicks. now with that out of the way, here's a little bit more background on the technical side of this run. almost every explanation in this video is entirely accurate. there were a few white lies we had to put in places to make it easier to explain (e.g. some of the FCPS explanation is a bit hand-wavey) but there's nothing really any more than that. that said, a lot of the details are obviously elided. there are tricks in this run that it'd take several hours to explain in full (which of course isn't feasible for a video like this) - and bear in mind that any% is one of the conceptually simpler categories! the only trick in this run which isn't currently well-understood by us technically-minded folk is actually the very first one: vault skip. we vaguely understand the conditions for getting it, and runners are pretty good at it nowadays, but the technical details behind the skip still aren't entirely clear. a few of us (in particular UncraftedName) are working on tearing apart the game code based on what we do know to figure out the details, but it's a pretty weird one. if you're interested in keeping up with the run, or have any questions about it, join the portal speedrunning discord at https://discord.gg/gQ285vS! if you have questions on the technical details of certain tricks or anything, please do ask in the #reverse-engineering channel - it's honestly quite rewarding to explain the hell that is this game to other people, so don't be scared to ask us about it. (be warned you might get about 3 times more info than you expect) thanks again to tomatoanus for making this video! i hope y'all found it interesting :D

I absolutely love that he spends about 30 minutes explaining mechanics and then when the run starts he has to include notes still about what specific things are called or why it's called Under Elevator 3. And he still included his positive message. Love this guy
  • @AlyenaMango
You did a great job explaining the glitches and I felt like I would understand whats happening. Then the speed run starts for real and holy shit it felt like you were narrating in a foreign language while we're on an acid trip. Mad respect to speedrunners for doing this, it always feels like magic. And thank you for your great narration and videos, I always look forward to them.
  • @TrueKyanite
My man gave an extraordinary explanation of one of the most complicated speedruns in history, and had time to give words of encouragement while explaining the run. Absolute Giga Chad
  • @scoe3000
Bro you don’t need to explain the length of your videos to nobody! Thank god they are longer than the run! I watch because I love your content and presentation. I can’t and will probably never speedrun anything nor do I want to, but I find it interesting and your explanations give me insight to a world I’ll never be a part of! Don’t worry about those comments, those are just common folks… you know… idiots! 😊 Do you bro!
  • @DoctorSwellman
I for one, appreciate it taking 7 times as long to explain a speedrun that's only 5 minutes. Thank you for the great video!
  • @MyFoot
5 minute speed run, 35 minutes to explain, this gonna be good. edit: I feel called out, not going to complain about a longer video. Look forward to all the tech.
  • @MagistrYoda9
When I first started watching your vids, I felt a little sceptical about the "no feeling is final" part. I didn't think it did anything, although I still thought you were good for trying it. Today I broke down and cried at that part. Now that I'm going through tough times, I finally understand how these words can help someone. Thank you
  • @BeatByRhythm
I just wanna say I always appreciate your mental health breaks during your videos, the one in this video almost had me crying and I’d like to lovingly thank you for putting those kind words out in a world where hate is the normal.
  • Man the tech in this run just went straight over my head and I felt like I could not keep up in the slightest with needing to process so much stuff at once, yet I think I still got most of it... Also you're absolutely right there is a tomorrow, thanks for reminding me, I needed that
  • @theresearchwisp
Suggestion: Next time you have to front load a video with all the glitch explanations, put a list of them on screen and check them off just like you do with the sections of the run. That would help people keep track of were they are in the intro segment, and give us a head start learning the glitch names and acronyms.
  • Both Portal Games, and Half-Life 2 have some of the coolest speedruns I've seen. Excited to finish this video. I'd love to see you tackle Half-Life 2 any% runs.. I used to run it myself, and still remember the hay-day of the Gocnak era.
  • @tylerw1625
I cannot wrap my head around people who assume an explanation of a speedrun would be the exact length of said speedrun. Love the videos my man, length is never an issue:D
  • @_distrilul
Just taking a moment to appreciate this channel for the best and clearest explanations to some of the most broken speedruns you can find online. As someone who absolutely adores technical explanations to glitches in video games and seeing how absolutely broken Portal speedruns were but never understanding how, seeing tomatoanus taking his time to talk with a bunch of top speedrunners and routers to collect all the strats and glitches and bundle it up in one video gives for the best content on Youtube imo It doesn't matter how fast you speak, how dense or long the video is, cause you are damn right I'll be rewatching this video from start to finish several times whenever it pops up in my recommended.
  • @Floris_VI
This was mind melting, this could easily have been an hour long video if you explained even slightly slower or went into some of the tech even deeper, crazy how complicated this speedrun is
  • @minecrash101
I love how he has this inspirational-heartwarming message in the middle of canteven casually breaking the laws of physics
